Cayman Race car build
Discussion
I'd like a bit of advice please.
I'm thinking about the porsche club championship for next season. I really damaged my knee a couple of years ago and so I only drive paddle shift gear box cars these days (it really hurts to heel and toe). It's just about possible that I might get permission to use a PDK car under certain conditions. That would limit me to class 1 and probably limit me to a 987.2 Cayman.
So here are my questions:
1. Build or buy, then convert ? There is quite a big jump up in price between a 987.1 race car and a 987.2 race car. Considering there is almost nothing one can do to the engine in the 987.2 and all cars are running close to road spec brakes no huge Alcons or brembos with mono block this and fully floating that and no aero no crazy carbon fibre, no fully rose jointed suspension. Some of the prices are getting in the same neighbourhood as an Aston Gt4 race car. So is it better build from a Cat C road car ?
2. What do you think it costs to build a cayman race car? I would imagine that the single biggest cost is fitting the cage, as everything has to come out of the car. New Audi TT cup cars are supposed to come out at something like 20-25k plus the cost of the donor. Is this where the Caymans end up?
3, What do the race insurance costs end up looking like ?

Have a word with Mandy or Chris at the Porsche Club ... there is a history of an exception being made for a competitor who required modification to the defined class specifications (intended to ensure competitors are competing on equal terms) ...
Then at least you will know what your options are ...

Steve H built a Cayman - full build and season 1 thread here, and season 2 thread here.
It would be worth dropping him an email to see if he can help out.

Yes sure,
I already reached out to Mandy and she’s going to see what they can do.

There are other options aside from the Porsche club championship
If you want to run exclusively with other Porsches there’s the Calm all Porsche Trophy
It's competitive, but very welcoming, and not a championship so you can pick and choose when and where to race
We run a PDK Cayman as you are looking to

That’s awesome
What sort of spec is your car ? What do you reckon the build cost was ?
Our car was built a few years ago by BrookspeedWhat sort of spec is your car ? What do you reckon the build cost was ?
We had looked at building a car but then got the opportunity to buy a ready built car
Custome cages cage
Moton 3 ways
Adjustable GT3 lower arms
Fibreglass rear hatch
Poly windows bar the front screen
We’re currently running on Nankang AR1s (Calm is an MSA list 1,2 series, not slicks)
Can’t help with build costs, but it wouldn’t have been cheap at the time
I’d say best bet is to go to a race and talk to everyone. That’s what we did 12 months ago. We went to a Calm meeting and spoke to everyone, felt really welcome and decided to start there
It’s our first season, but it’s been really good fun so far. Series has a wide range of cars and driver abilities, but everyone is treated the same whether you’re first or last

I have only skim-read the regs, but it looks like most things are 'free' - doesn't this mean the driver with the deepest pockets wins each class?Just asking!

Well, if you wanted, and could afford a 992 Cup car you could run in the invitational class and win every race, howeverJust asking!
So far from what I’ve seen people running in the series are genuine amateurs without unlimited budgets, though some obviously have better resources
Driving ability shows out more than the cars, with a handful who are obviously very fast, and not because of the machinery

Thanks. Any 986 2.7 competitors, or does everyone chose the 3.2?
As far as I know all of the Boxsters are 3.2S, but no reason a 2.7 couldn’t be used as it weight and power basedHowever there are Caymans, 924, 924S, 944, 968 and a 911 running regularly each race
Caymans getting more popular with two new cars at Brands last weekend

Mine was a 718 but it was a start from scratch build which I think is a good way to do it although inevitably time consuming and potentially expensive. It would be worth dropping him an email to see if he can help out.
I would echo the positive comments about the Calm series, I did a couple of their events last year before I sold the car, they are a good bunch to race with and much more open on the regs than some championships.
I was at Brands last weekend helping to run this
If you are going 987 my understanding is that the .2 is much the stronger engine although if you want pdk it will be the only choice anyway I think.
Build costs are largely down to how crazy you go with it but I spent more on the build than on the lightly crashed car, it adds up fast .
Any questions please shout up!
You’re quite right.
The PDK was only available from 987.2 onwards.
I’d think about a 981 or 982 but the costs of getting on the grid get spicy and if I’m not careful I’ll be knocking on the door of an older 981 GT4 clubsport race car in terms of purchase / build costs.
It would be ideal if I could get a clean PDK race car ‘ready made’ from someone
