Trying to check my oil level with little success.
Reading the manual the engine should not be running, however on the various websites it shows the engine
running. Will obviously try both approaches, just interested to know which is the correct method. It’s has a 2.7 engine.
Thanks
The manual for my 2.9 987 says that the engine must be at operating temperature and "Engine is idling".Reading the manual the engine should not be running, however on the various websites it shows the engine
running. Will obviously try both approaches, just interested to know which is the correct method. It’s has a 2.7 engine.
Thanks
Have you tried it idling and stationary?

Firstly you need to have the engine warm & up to temperature.Reading the manual the engine should not be running, however on the various websites it shows the engine

Then park the car on a level surface, engine off & wait 1 min for the oil to drain into the pan. Then ignition on & check the reading.
The car will give a reading when the engine is running, however this is not as accurate.

Having read this thread ahead of car collection Saturday I ask the dealer how best to check.
I didn't mention this post . He said immediately, leave engine running once warm.

Slightly off topic, but the Manual for my old Caterham with the Rover 1.6 K-Series, also stated that the engine should be warm and idling; and that's with an old-fashioned dipstick.
from memory (I could be wrong!) it depends on whether you had the dry sump or Apollo tank fitted, these needed to be checked at idle and if you didn't have either then you would check with ignition off after engine was up to temp and oil allowed to drain back into sump.GT3Manthey said:

The 981 manual I have definitely says to turn the engine off & also suggests you could/should do it when filling up for fuel

No worries, enjoy. If you have it one segment below the max reading line, that seems to be the preferred for many people, and ideal if you plan to track the car.
My track days are over . This car is purely for road fun and tbh it's blemish free so I'd like to keep it that way .
The oil level reading makes sense . I've always kept my 911's at around .75 as a preferred level .
