The second button that I press after starting up is the auto stop/start thing.

In stop/go traffic the engine only switches off for maybe 30 seconds, and only for a handful of stops.

So, I really do not bother with the function in these circumstances.

But what about the other "benefit" - the 3 cylinder deactivation at cruising speeds?

Has anyone tried it over a significant period to see whether consumption improves noticeably?

Personally, I absolutely hate the weird noise of running on 3 cylinders and do worry about the potential extra wear associated with such an asymmetric arrangement (yes, I know it swaps from bank to bank regularly...but it just seems against nature...)

And constant speed motorway consumption seems pretty good to me anyway.

So why bother, apart from optimising emission test performance?

It's an emissions gimmick. I always drive in sport and I would never want the 3 cylinder deactivation active. Auto Start/Stop disables it as well, so can be done in Normal mode, too.

Couple of MPG tops in my experience

Oddly, on some journeys I get same MPG in sport...guess it all depends on how crap the traffic is wink

I agree about disabling the stop/start at the start of every journey . The sound at cruise is disconcerting, sounds broken.
