I have a 987.2 Cayman, its a 2.9 manual box car in arctic silver and I've had it three and a half years. It's perfectly suited my needs in that time, doing 3-4k miles per year whilst being suitably analogue, fun and engaging on my 13 mile A and B road commute to work.

However, next year I will be leaving my current job and returning to flying for a large airline out of Heathrow, this means my commute to work will be 4-5 trips per month down on the M4, so about 6-7k miles per year plus another couple for leisure stuff. I don't want to get another diesel BMW (as good as they are) and I can't do it in my current 987.2C. Hence a heavy dose of man maths and the desire to have another Porsche means I'm looking at 2.7 981s with a PDK box. Cruise and heated seats are a must have too as are it being ULEZ compliant.

Rather than swap to another cayman, I'd like to try a Boxster as I quite often want to put the roof down in my current car and also owning a Caterham R300 with an aeroscreen means I'm no stranger to open top motoring. I've test driven a 981 Boxster S this week and it's confirmed my thoughts. So far so good.

My main concern is the state of the market right now. My budget is 28-30k and I'd be paying cash. Would I be better to wait another until next year or is now as good time as any?

Secondly, how do Boxsters fare being stored outside and used in all weathers? I have a double garage which I could put it in, however it's full of the Caterham, 2 sets of track wheels/tyres and the families bikes right now, which means it will stay on the drive. I know about keeping the drains clear and I'm always all over keeping my cars clean and maintained but any issues with this plan? I would buy a second set of wheels for the 981 so I have winter tyres to fall back on.

Sorry for the essay, very interested to hear PH's opinions.

You might get better response over on Boxanet...

I've a 2.7pdk 981 Boxster but it's garaged so not really qualified to make comment on how they fare outdoors.

As for values - who knows, but from what I've seen, they've dropped significantly over the last 6 months. I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if 2024 sees a similar drop.

The Boxster is a perfectly modern car it will be just fine outside.

We kept ours outside for a few years and a friend doesn't have a garage so it only lives outside. Neither of us have had any problems.

I'm in a similar position, having had a Caterham "Superlight deluxe" for 17 years, and a Cayman 2.9 for 4 months. I'd have loved a Cayman with some sort of sunroof (even a tilt/remove moonroof) but suggesting that on here wasn't well accepted. I'll just have to mix and match according to the weather.

Hi ,i have a 2.7 981 Boxster with the PDK box.

I use it as my daily driver and unless it’s raining the roof is down.Heated seats are a must but once on and its warmed up which doesn’t take long it’s a nice coccon.

Its comfortable easy to hustle along even with the 2.7 engine ,i have the flappy paddles steering wheel but never use them the pdk is that good.Pressing the sport button satisfies the need for some engine noise by your ear.

For its type there’s good storage front and rear, and nothing quite beats that top down feeling even on a motorway with lorries thundering past,,,( not that they thunder past that often ..grins)

Not selling it till i can’t get in and out .
