Looks like the winter has arrived with frost everywhere. I noticed some sorn their cars over the winter. I have a GT4 as a weekend car and wonder if I should do the same. I have other dd so don't really fancy going out in cup2s. Do you guys in the same position sorn the car too? Is it worth the hassle saving the road tax and car insurance?

If you don’t need or want to use it sorning it makes sense especially if you are on direct debit for the car tax

Re insurance I would keep that going or at least have some form of insurance. I used to have insurance on my racecar which covered it to and from the track and in the garage. Can’t remember the exact name of it but a plan thatcham did it and it was reasonable and gave some piece of mind

I hear lots of stories about cup 2’s in cold weather but if you are sensible they are perfectly usable at this time of year.

I sorned my 996 the first year I had it as I knew I was doing work to it to rustproof etc. I’ve not bothered since as its saves me £25/month and if it’s fine and dry then I want to get out in it. Plus it’s also good to have a back up car should the daily decide it wants a day off unexpectedly!

Just put some decent tyres on and drive it all year round.

I SORN my cars from the end of September until the following April because the weather in my area is pretty awful. Another reason for doing so is that I begrudge paying the government a penny more in tax than I have to because, even when the vehicles are all taxed, they barely do any mileage. I do keep them insured all year around though.

Absolutely this. I’ve never sorn’d any car ever. There is a lot to be said for a winter drive in freezing temperatures, warming the car up, getting heat in the tyres and really leaning into the drive. Is usually a lot of fun

Having had a 997.2 that went rusty underneath driving through winter I’m now super cautious and don’t sorn my 981 Spyder but never drive it if wet or salty so that means keeping it in charge from Nov- April and then using it very occasionally when weather permits.

I sorn mine from Nov to March. It doesn’t like our salty, gritty roads!

Always SORNd my silly cars in the winter, no need to drive them on the salty, crappy roads when I have other vehicles.

Definitely keep it insured though.

Worth checking the insurance too as some do not allow you to have the car SORN'd, and in some cases may need a special policy which is designed for SORN.
