Today I've been to see a June 2007 Cayman 2.7 with a view to buying it. It's for sale at an independent garage and is priced at £10999 - is that reasonable? Spec wise it has Sports Chrono and a 6 speed gearbox. Miles are just under 90,000 and 8 previous owners. Condition is good and it drives well. Full service history (invoices not service book) with OPC and the Porsche Independents. The other question I have is - inevitably I guess - about the IMS bearing. Will this car have the later bigger bearing? The engine number is 65713319. Thanks everyone for your help, Dave

Ims bearing is fine on that model year on a 2 7.
Check the road tax though as 6speed pushes it into top bracket I believe!!

Also do a MOT check on any advisories /failures and if they have been rectified .

I’d be checking the condition of the front crossover coolant pipes, if they haven’t already been done they certainly will need doing sooner rather than later. Could be something you factor into your offer as £1k+ job.

We bought one earlier this year, a 2.7 5-speed.

Research indicates that the 6-speed ‘box does push the tax category up, which seems ridiculous really.

The 2.7 doesn’t seem to have the IMS issues, and our car has receipts for bore-score testing (obviously ok) in its history, but the 3.4 engine seems more susceptible.

Going on things our 57 plate 80,000 mile car has had replaced, check for gear linkages and air con radiator issues ( they are very exposed).

It’s a delightful thing; insurance is cheap, and 32-3mpg at a motorway cruise is easy. Ours has 19” turbo wheels which probably detract from the ride comfort, and a sports exhaust which booms a bit for my liking at very low speeds.

Thanks for your advice. Your car looks superb in that colour and with the 19 inch wheels. I'm thinking that a ppi with a Porsche specialist would be the way to go....

Just be warned you can easily end up spending £3-5k over the next year or so if a lot of the major stuff due by that mileage hasn't already been addressed. E.g. Crossover pipes, air con condensers, clutch, water pump, suspension refresh and so on. So I'd get it inspected.
£10,999 from a dealer is almost suspiciously cheap unless they want it gone quickly and bought it for peanuts. Maybe the added road tax cost of the 6 speed is a factor, but really good 2.7s can go for a few k more.
Great car btw if you get a good one, recently sold my 2.7 5 speed. I got lucky, found a good one with all the major things done, ran for just over a couple of years and and got out without any big bills other than a major service and a couple of parts that weren't too labour intensive to fit.

I’ve had my 2007 car from new, 5 speed manual, love it as much now as the day we collected it. 80k miles
Cross over pipe comments are true, mine were done 2 years ago, check rear springs at that mileage again had mine changed.
AC condenser are prone to damage true but I’ve only had to change once.
No other major issues.
Lots of owners would put me off.

I bought a 2007 987 and took it for a free inspection at a specialist and he advised I had to spend £5k in the next year, said best to sell it on.

Check the exhaust mine was very thin in places, and if the manifold has to come off for any reason this will be big money to sort due to seized studs.

If it has PASM make sure the shocks are in good condition or a big bill.

6 speed isn't worth it for the extra tax cost.

The 2.7 is the lightest Cayman sold. Check the tyres, if they are aged this will affect the handling and need replacing.

Coffin arms and bushes.

If the condensers don't need replacing check the aircon runs cold. Mine needed a top up, but still didn't blow that cold.

Open the bonnet and check the drain holes are free of debris as soon as you can. Mine was absolutely filthy and full of leaves.

It drove like no other car I have ever owned for better than my Boxsters, however was hell over speed bumps and I got fed up of driving it in traffic. Admittedly this isn't its natural habitat. And I missed the drop top of the Boxster so sold it on in the end, I kept wanting to reach for the button to drop the roof.

Your 987 Boxster was absolutely lovely and sounded amazing.

All 987.1 Caymans have the final big bearing. 2.7 versus 3.4 not relevant to IMS risk.

Scoring risk, of course, is miles higher on the 3.4.

He didn’t spot a failed head gasket and numerous other issues on a 986 he inspected for a member of this forum.
Told him the car was sound-it wasn’t obviously.
Well worth the money??
