Hi guys,

I posted last week regarding a 718 GTS however decided to hold fire.

A friend came to visit me yesterday in a 987 Gen 1 S 3.4 which he had wrapped Nardo Grey and a GT4 bumper and all the lights dim wrapped etc. Looked a very nice 70-80k car which he paid 17k for plus 3k for all the wrap and alloy respray.

Got me looking at them and quickly ruled out a Gen 1 but then upped the budget to look at Gen 2 which look more reliable and also a more modern interior with PDK also available.

I've been considering looking at this motor, getting a few gt4 style parts and having it wrapped in a matt black with alloys refurbished into champagne bronze/gold.

Is this a good example and anything else I should want including in the spec? Only thing I can potentially see it doesn't have is the PASM?

Would mileage be ok etc? Or am I best upping again slightly to get a lower mileage?

I'd like to get the car, any body kit changes and wrapped for 30k all in.

In terms of mileage I'd be more concerned about condition and servicing personally. My 987.2 S (manual) is just about to hit 90K miles (bought at 24K) and it's had a lot of work done on it over the years to keep it in tip top condition. You could buy a low mileage car which will be about to hit the time when it needs crossover pipes, a suspension refresh (control arms, shock mounts, etc) and if it's got a sports exhaust the valves don't last long, plus a host of other bits of work that seem to be common on these cars (it's been the same for both I've had). So for 80K miles I'd be expecting a thick pile of paperwork showing things like the above. Otherwise it could be a money pit. I love mine though!

As for PASM, my previous didn't have it and this one does. You get used to it but I think I preferred non-PASM. PASM felt initially in some way synthetic flinging it around corners. Couldn't say why as I don't have the driving skill to understand. Something you'd have to try and decide for yourself I reckon!

I'd be looking for:
PSE
Sports Seats
PDLS/HiD lights if you expect to use it much in the dark

I wouldn't worry about the mileage, but it would be good to know that the gearbox has been serviced on time.

Looks to be a good spec. PSE could be retrofitted or go with a third party like Carnewal. PASM potentially desireable if tracking it, but not like it'll handly terribly without it.

Seats - meh, might be other more desirable options. Wouldn't put me off the car.

As mentioned buy on condition, check the suspension & other bits like service history. Think the main thing is has it had its 12 year service? Because PDK gearbox oil needs changing then & is an expensive job - indy prices about £600

Mileage could be an issue, depends how long you intend to keep it.

Just received all the service history. First two at Porsche then 5 others at independents, most recently at nine excellence which also says pdk clutch and diff fluid which could potentially be what you meant?

I’m planning on using 911 Sports in Horncastle for my maintenance work going forward.

The interior looks reasonably modern for the year but as you say seats could do with a tidy. Something to potentially consider I guess.

I’d probably keep for 3 years or so. I only add about 3-5000 miles a year on average and, as above, planning on a full wrap and gt4 conversion body kit.

Also should have said most recent service was 31/5 again at nine excellence at 79k mileage.

Seems pretty tidy in all honesty.

718 GTS to a 987 on 80k is a drastically different proposition I’d say.

Nothing wrong with the mileage and the 987 has the hugely better hydraulic steering, however would expect maintenance costs to reflect the higher mileage.

Personally I’d buy as new as you can afford, these cars really don’t depreciate much.

be warned many say just retrofit PSE if it doesn't have it and yet its now on back order and well over 3k fitted so not worth it imo.

True but I just want a bit of cheap ish fun. All wrapped with the kit 30k in or something compared to 50-60 on a nice gts 718.

I imagine the depreciation you mention wouldn’t be applicable to a 718 as they may still have quite a fall?

Common misconception imo, on cars I’d never usually say expect values to go anywhere other than down, but they really aren’t making that many, and GTS values especially seem to be holding very strong.

I reckon for 2-3 years you could take a punt and end up spending more on the 987. Ymmv, of course.

Cannot recall the exact wording in the Service book but it's something along the lines of:

6 years - PDK clutch oil change
12 years - PDK gearbox oil change

That might be true but OP said about modding the car so the market of potential buyers for a modded 718 GTS could be quite limited in UK

Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice and pointers.

I think, on second thoughts, going 30k in on a modded (limited resale market) 987 when I could get into a 718 S for 10k more seems a little silly.

Appreciate the pointers - great help!

So 12k would be clutch and gearbox?

I've done these myself on my 981 and it's not hard. It's been almost 2 years since the clutch fluid was done so I'm tempted to do it again soon. Fresh clutch fluid really does drive nice.
