What sort of oil pressure would you expect to see, when trundling at constant speed between 2k and 3k rpm?

I don't really pay attention, but I seem to recall my car running around 2.3 bar maybe?

Thanks for responding.

As a first-time Porsche owner, maybe I am being a bit of an automotive hypochondriac.

Mine seems a bit low at 25 - 27 psi (old skool) which equates to 1.7 - 1.9 bar (at 4.4k miles)?

I suppose I should pay more attention to the owner's manual and check against the recommended pressures for higher engine speeds.

With today's electronics I just drive the thing and let the car tell me if there is a problem e.g. oil level low and requires top up etc smile

Yep, agree with this. Although the comparatively high water temps got my attention at first until I learned that was normal

Yep, me too and as you say totally normal for the new 4.0 smile

Yep. Totally normal.

Water temps should be at the 90C mark and oil temps around 110C +/- 4 degrees however it will drop if you're in sport or sport+ as the 3rd radiator comes into play.

They're higher than that for me, usually around 112-ish.

Correct. In normal mode both water and oil are at about 110-ish.

As soon as you use a heavy right foot, or put it into Sport mode, the water temp drops almost instantly to 80-90c as the third rad kicks in.

Yep 112 degrees fully warmed up both oil and water during normal 'spirited' road driving around Snowdonia this last week.

Most surprising was the fuel economy averaging 35.4mpg although that included some motorway.

Maybe I'm not driving hard enough then. My water temp doesn't go past 90.

My car must be broken. I’ve never seen that level of economy even on a 100% motorway/dual carriage way run from Perth to Manchester.

Water temp should definitely drop into the 80-90 range in Sport mode or if you push the accelerator down far enough.

Have you tried putting it in Sport or PDK Sport (if it’s a PDK car obvs)? The water temp should drop within a few seconds.

From the U.S Manual.

Vehicle Settings in the MFD

The generic 718 UK Manual only states Min 3.5 BAR @ 5000 rpm, but that covers all engine variants so I'd guess they've just neglected to add the NA engine data.
Lower values aren't given as the system is self monitoring, "if you need to know we'll tell you".

So I thought I’d have a play around on the way to work this morning…

Ambient temp this morning was approx 17c

Non Sport/PDK Sport mode:

Once up to temp, water and oil settled at about 107c

Anything over ~50% throttle for more than 1s and water temp dropped to ~84c

After ~30s of normal driving at less than ~50% throttle and the temp would come back up to ~107c over the next 30-60sec

With Sport/PDK Sport engaged:

As soon as the button was pressed the water temp dropped on the initial press to ~85c I presume because the still very cold 3rd rad water mixed in and dropped the system temp quite low initially.

Subsequent activation of Sport PDK would drop the temp to ~94c and would stay at this temp when only using very light throttle application.

Once ~50+% throttle is used for more than ~1s the water temp dropped to ~85c in just the same way it does in normal mode.

In Sport PDK water temp never went over ~95c

Basically there are several different operating windows that affect water temp in the car. But they are pretty easy to track and replicate if you are at all bothered smile

I always used to switch sport mode on my 981gt4 for a few miles before reaching destination/home to cool engine down before parking up.
The whole idea for engine to run so hot is to reduce emissions, before 9x1 engines didn’t run so hot and none this thermal tech.
If i was running in hot weather or traffic I would keep sport on for reduced engine temperatures!

Interesting that the 981 GT4 (and Spyder) would take an age to warm up especially during the colder months whereas the newer 718 is quite rapid during the warm up cycle.

Probably contributed to the relatively poor fuel economy of the older 981.

I have a feeling the 4.0 oil temp sensor is at a different point in the loop than the 981’s. As you say it warms uo much faster, which I guess is possible, but as others have said above, it also drops incredibly fast when using more revs. This makes me think it’s measuring at a point which doesn’t represent the bulk/average temperature of the oil.

Yes they do seem to run hot. The track precision app is useful and records temps too. You could use it on the road too if you wanted. Last month on track oil got to 119C, transmission 107C and coolant 87. 3rd rad kicking in for coolant. On road it runs hotter unless you are “making progress”.

So I've made the conclusion that the GT4 runs hotter than the GTS 4.0.

I went out for a drive in mine yesterday and the water temp reached 90C within a couple of miles while oil temp increased slowly to a max of 110C with an ambient temp of 21C and there they sat for the whole trip, well water temp did anyway. Oil temp did rise slightly to 117C but then dropped after a couple of miles. Normal mode, sport was not used, sadly frown
