Wheel alignment - 718 Spyder
Discussion
I've just had the first service done on my Spyder, and it only has 2200 miles on it (yes, yes I know...). The service was covered under the monthly service plan I have (saves 25%) so didn't actually pay on the day.
I was advised upon collection that the wheel alignment was out (would be £350 to check and would need rebooked) - and I'm not sure how they know this without actually doing the alignment. The tyre wear is fine across the tread, and the steering wheel is straight. Also note the low mileage of the car.
Are they likely to be correct, or are they trying it on to make more money out of me?

Part of the service will be a brief check of the current alignment. £350 is steep though, and OPCs aren't always best equipped to get the alignment spot on.
If the car feels OK and you're happy with it you can leave well enough alone. Personally, as the factory settings are often pretty dodgy, I'd choose a local specialist to set the car up for you. It will be less than £350, at my place it's the cost of 90mins labour.

just go for max camber at the rear and have the front (-0.5 degree more camber)
toe all round 0 or slightly positive eg 0.03mm
you are likely to get -1.2 degrees on the rear. unless you have upgraded toe links.
You will have more wear on the inner edges as a result but nothing too drastic

My Boxster is currently in for its service at my OPC. As part of the form filling they asked if I would like a walk around of the car and I agreed as I thought it would be just to agree on any damage (there isn't any).
Anyway, they drove it into a specially constructed room next to the customer waiting area and the service guy said my tyres and tracking were fine. I was a little confused, but he showed me on the TV screen that the tyre depth and tracking had been measured as he drove into the 'room'. Quite impressive as it actually showed mm depths to a single decimal point across 4 points on each tyre.
It was well worth doing the walk around as the car was then raised and we inspected the discs and pads together and then walked underneath the car to look at the suspension and exhaust valves etc.

They will have something like this installed :

Regardless of the above , my mates GT4RS was way out from the factory despite the OPC checking and stating it's in tolerance. Centre Gravity found 3 of the 4 wheels miles out justifying his rather disappointing comments on handling which surprised us.
It would seem CG have also seen a whole bunch of 992 GT3's with a similar issue so somebody at the factory is doing a ste job.
All that considered , provided you know what settings you want , any decent place should be able to adjust accordingly without boutique labour costs.

These very reactive fast GT Porsches like the GT4 RS and 992GT3 are so finely honed they suffer more than most from out of spec alignment. FWIW Ferraris are even worse in my experience especially with the toe being all over the place. The 992GT3 has received a lot of bad press due to poor alignment and over inflated tyres.
Sadly so many of both leave the factories and dealers way out of spec which should be one of the simplest to check and correct if necessary.

Tolerances and transportation will be major factor as to why cars are being delivered sometimes to customers with wacky alignment.
Geo is not touched during PDI.
Even the cars that go to PEC… no alignment check.
They don’t have the time in their budget, during prep for delivery, and the vast majority of customers don’t have a clue anyway.

Can I ask how you got a Porsche service plan? I've just tried to get one on my 4.0 but was told that it's only available on Caysters up to 2016.
AFAIK it's only through Peter Vardy (Aberdeen and Perth). They offer 25% off the total cost of the first two services if you either pay upfront or monthly (no interest charges). Funnily enough I wasn't keen on giving them the full amount upfront so monthly it isJust go somewhere else for it, it’s likely suspension takes a little while to settle after being brand new but seeing as you’ve managed 2200 miles in your two years it will be well settled by now!
I did more than that in my GT4 the first week I had it touring round Scotland and the factory settings were miles out….
Where do you live and someone can point you in the right direction where to get it the way you want it to drive?
