The old girl is at around 142k miles, 22 years old, so time to tackle those chain tensioners.

Whilst the block is out, putting in a new clutch which will hopefully make those changes up to second gear a bit less crunchy.

Anything else worth doing whilst I have easy access?

She’s mainly my missus run-around / station car so doesn’t get much stick, but is a pleasure to drive and is well maintained generally.

Sorry I can't help out with your questions but I like your idea...keeping a perfectly good car going by spending money where its needed, most would just sell on and buy something newer...these cars can last for a very long time if well looked after...top thinking.

Thanks, yes I enjoy it. Much much easier to have a new car of course, and most take that route like you say for that reason, and because newer is ‘better’. Cars from 2000-2010 seem to me to offer a brilliant combination of modern performance and driving experience, mainly mechanical so can be repaired, loads of info and parts available, and great value. Suits my motoring needs perfectly.

Alternator refurb? I did one in-situ and it was doable though the bulkhead but quite painful…

I know less about the oil cooler but perhaps something to think about?

I also did an AOS in-situ and wish I had spent more time stripping and cleaning out the entire intake as I got the feeling that when it was new, it ran very clean (with hardly any hydrocarbon smells) and once I got rid of the tell-take AOS smoke bombs, it ran well enough but never quite as odour-free as I had hoped.
