Hi

2017 Base Cayman, 18,000 miles - looking to buy.

Is this oil staining typical? Also, is this clear sticker inside the door aperture normal?

Thanks.

I think the clear sticker is to stop squeaking noises…have seen it before.

I wouldnt worry about the underside…it will get filthy and the ally bits will corrode with a white fur over time…..I certainly wouldn’t worry.

Firstly the staining.

The 2.0 engine is a PITA to do an oil change. The filter is waaaaay up there and there is an oil drain funnel attached to the chassis to prevent oil from dripping all over the subframe and suspension parts. Pretty good chance that the funnel wasn't cleaned out after the oil change and some residual oil has dripped out over time. As long as the stain isn't wet to the touch now, I wouldn't be too concerned.

The sticker on the door frame is to prevent the door rubber rubbing the paint away. Think of it as a piece of PPF.

As a side note, I'd check that it's had it's 4 year service which is a big one (around £1500) including spark plugs and brake fluid change. Things to look out for on the 2.0 are leaking water pump and stuck turbo actuator. The latter can be checked by accelerating hard whilst watching the boost gauge. If the boost builds to 12psi and falls suddenly or doesn't get above 5psi the the actuator is stuck. You can loosen it yourself and I can post a link to a thread if needed but if you take it to Porsche they will just replace the turbo at a cost of around £3k.

Thanks very much, that makes sense.

Any thoughts on this please?

I also include paint depth reading below!

Thanks again.

Doesn't look too bad tbh. The paint depth it relatively consistent throughout. Given the cars age, I would have though it would have had a polish at some stage so reducing some of the lacquer but nothing to be concerned about. If the front end paint depths were high then it would suggest to a front respray which isn't uncommon on 718s or 911s. It would appear that anything between 100-180 microns is the norm. The boot and bonnet are a little low but could be as they are aluminium not steel.

It may be worth checking for a history using Carvertical. Well worth £20 in my opinion.

Private sale, OPC or indie?

Again, much appreciated!

Well regarded used car dealer, but not Porsche specialist.

Thanks

You're well within your rights to ask for the full history of the car and they 'should' give you the history if they know it (that's their get out of jail card though).

Porsche owners are fanatical about paperwork so the dealer should have all the receipts and MOT certificates for work done on the car. If it has had work done, as long as it has been done by an approved Porsche bodyshop, I wouldn't be too concerned. Without seeing the car in person and actually looking at the gaps I wouldn't like to bet my house on it.

I've seen dealers go round with a paint thickness meter when buying so if you want to verify that paint is original on a car you wish to buy, isn't that fair game ?

I'll bet your dealer loves anybody and everybody who buys a car from them .... and yes that car looks good to me ...

Yep WBAC did a paint test on my daughters car. He took it for a test drive and a friend followed. Superbright light and depth checker looking for resprays.

I wonder how much is used as tools to knock you down and then they sell it for the same as the "deep paint" cars?

I wouldn’t worry about the clear strip inside the door. Pretty sure that has been applied at the factory. All 987.2 caymans that I have seen have a very similar strip.

I've owned five new 718 Caymans and never seen that before

It's definitely factory ... one of the things I look for to see if it's been painted, but not necessarily on the later models which didn't even have the "Birth Certificate ID" sticker under the bonnet ...
