987 rear trunk gas struts
Discussion
Hi, the rear gas struts on my R seem to be on the way out as they don’t go as high as they did nor as smoothly as they used to. I have got some replacements (Stabilus) with matching part number but they seem to be ‘longer’ than the ones on the car I.e. when offering them up it would appear the boot needs to open further but I’ve opened it as far as I think it can. Pushing the gas struts manually to make them smaller doesn’t seem to be an option. Anyone done this and can offer any tips?
Cheers

The boot lid opens wider than you think, see here at 5 minutes: https://youtu.be/2UqTSKnZRp4?t=300
SGS in Derby can regas your original struts for about 20 pounds if you aren't comfortable using the Stabilus.

I have used these on my 986 front & rear and they have worked like a dream.

Where did you buy them from as they may have been described incorrectly by the seller. I changed the hatch & bonnet struts on my Cayenne , bought from different sellers. The bonnet strut was advertised as such but turned out to be a hatch strut (longer).
I've owned a Cayman R in the past but never had to change the struts so didn't have the same issue. Are the 'barrels' on CR hatch & bonnet struts the same length ?

Bought from design 911 and they have the correct part number stamped on them. Still don’t feel comfortable forcing the boot to open further than the natural position.
The "higher than it wants to go naturally" position is the service position to give better access to the engine when working on it. It takes very little force to put it into the fully extended position (just gently lifting with one hand will do it) and it's indeed designed to do exactly that. You're not going to break it!Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
