Hi all.

Question spawned from another thread I created asking about different tyre types front and back due to the fronts on my Cayman needing replacing ( https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...), and it made me wonder what tyres are the current 718 Caymans (and Boxsters I guess) being shipped with?

I know there's a universal preference here for Michelins, but I wonder if Porsche is of the same opinion. Also keen to know if they're of the UUHP (MP4S / Eagle F1 SS) or UHP (MP4, Eagle F1 Asymmetrics, etc) variants?

Thanks.

Ok thanks. So another UHP level tyre then. The P Zeros are one of the few types available in both front and rear sizes too.

It's luck of the draw between P-Zero's and MPS4S I think. I'm not sure if any have been delivered with Eagle F1's.

If you are replacing tyres I would choose the MPS4S.

Our GTS came with P-Zeros back in March.

There was a 2022 Boxster parked opposite our house last week that had Eagle F1s but it was on the 19inch standard S wheels (although it was actually a 2.0 base).

Pirelli PZ$s for me on a GTS delivered in March however a chap was picking his GTS up the same day that was built the week before mine and it came with PS4Ss.

Luck of the draw TBH.

The PZ4s are pretty good IMO compared to the PS4Ss. Pirelli had to do something as the PS4Ss were wiping the floor with them.

I collected my 2016 C gts from a OPC in July. It was on 20 inch wheels and came with 4 brand new 'N' rated MP4's. I was a happy bunny.

I've just had a brand new set of N1 P Zeros from someone whose C GTS was delivered beginning of December. They're going on my 981 C GTS replacing N0 P Zero's.

Thanks all. Those of you noting P Zero tyres, are they all PZ4s?

Looking at this review, they would seem to be a very good tyre. Handy for me if I have to replace all 4, as they seem widely available.

Yep checked the set sat in my kitchen and they're N1 PZ4's. Delivered December on a 718 GTS.

Pirelli PZ4 is a very good tyre - low noise also.
Should have quite a prominent protective sidewall profile.

I can't just make rash decisions, so if anyone is interested I have noted the scores of both the MPS4S and PZ4s in the 2021 Tyre Reviews test below:

They aren't true rivals as the PZ4 competes with the MP4 in the UHP category, not the MPS4S in the UUHP category, but these are the tyres consistently available in Cayster sizes at the moment. As such, I expected the MPS4S to be better in the dry, but I didn't want something that fell off too badly in the wet as I do drive my car all year round.

The number brackets next to each result is its position out of the 14 tyres on test.

So, as expected I suppose. A UUHP tyre is empirically faster in the dry, but falls off a little in the wet. The UHP tyre is broadly excellent everywhere and in this instance the PZ4 would have beaten the MPS4S on aggregate, if it weren't for its oddly poor aquaplaning result.

Not sure I'm any closer to an answer laugh Got a few TDs booked this year, so will likely just go MPS4S.

You can’t look at a general tyre test and assume the Porsche fitted tyres will follow that trend.

The Porsche tyres might have different tread compounds, construction, wear, grip, rolling resistance … etc

Pirellis consistently seem to receive a lot of criticism on here, yet in the magazine tests they always come out far closer. It’s almost as if some of these reviews were paid for… laugh

PZeros on Porsches have certainly been criticised quite a lot here in the past, whilst the Michelins and Goodyear feedback seems consistently far more favourable.

Arrived with Pirelli P-Zero PZ4's, I'd rather have the Michelins and I'm sure come replacement time I'll will swap to PS4S's.

It always amuses me when generalised conclusions are made about certain brands.

Pirelli, for example, have a long standing reputation as an innovative manufacturer of quality performance tyres for a wide range of applications, they are the official supplier to F1 and many other race series, they are OE fitment on most prestige sports cars - Porsche, Ferrari, Mclaren, Lamborghini, etc, they come out well in most independent reviews………

But, it just takes a few people on an internet forum to declare that Pirelli’s are rubbish and that somehow has more substance - it’s brilliant biggrin
