i was advised to change pads and discs and i'd already heard light brake "scraping" so knew that the pads needed replacing

all threads on here refer to "pads and discs" when replacing pads - do they always get replaced together?

the lip on my discs can't be more than about 2mm - is that a lot?

what would be the (OPC) approx cost of pads only vs pads and discs?

sorry for all the noobie questions

No such thing as a bad question.

It's the same as every other vehicle - no.

Finger in the air measurement isn't always reliable, but I'd say '2mm' might well be time to replace. Take them to a garage you trust if you are not sure yourself.

A lot - but you never need to get the OPC to do consumables. Source suitable replacements and get anyone to do it. Or do it yourself. It's usually very easy if you've done any car mechanics.

And are you still in a Porsche warranty?

A 2mm lip is 4mm of the thickness and is probably close to the wear limit, I can’t remember what it is.

Regardless, with a 2mm lip the likelihood of the discs lasting the full life of another set of pads is remote.

4mm off the disks must mean they are knacked surely, that's a huge amount!

2mm wear brings it to the minimum allowable thickness (1mm each side of a single disc) so if 2mm per side is correct it's heavily worn.

Also if you've worn the pads right through (you said scraping?) it's not good for the surface of the disc either.

Buy the parts yourself online then either fit yourself or pay someone to. Not worth using Porsche imo.

Cheers,
Dunc.

big thanks to all of you - that really helps

didn't realise that so "little" wear on the discs was already at the limit

pretty sure they're not over worn as the car was recently serviced and the advisory was that pads were close to the limit and the warning light would soon come on (hasn't come on yet) and discs were recommended (but not urgent) to also be changed - maybe it's not as close to 2mm as i thought

the "scraping" noise (probably the wrong word to use) was very light and intermittent but more than once i thought that i would need to get it looked at

car is under extended warranty so i need original parts. the original quote from the OPC was usual high prices but in the end we agreed a much fairer price that wasn't far off a couple of quotes i got from some well regarded independents in the area

considering i get a hassle free courtesy car (which i need) i think it's a fair deal
