I do quite a few track days, mostly my vRS Skoda and occasionally with my Boxster S, (which is really too nice).

I can get my hands on a very cheap 3.2 Boxster tiptronic with a low mileage engine but tatty body.

Very vague thoughts on using it as a track day car. I would much prefer a manual but was quite impressed at how quick it was on the road.

If this was used on the track, driven quite hard, would it die quickly?

Mileage is 50K.

So far as I know, the 986 has a Mercedes automatic, while the 987 has a ZF. The Mercedes box is very widely used (Jag used it when they needed a strong gearbox for the XJR), and I've not heard of any major concerns. I'd give it a fluid change and double check all the radiators, then forget about it!

Just consulting my memory, I vaguely remember reading about someone who fitted flappy paddles, possibly from an Audi to a tip car. They would be much better as the original buttons on the steering wheel are highly likely to be missed when on it!

Porsche made a single 964RS with Tiptronic for test purposes.

The last I heard that was still going well, and being used on trackdays by its owner who I met at Spa some years ago !

Yep, agree with everything above, the Tiptronic may not be many things, but I think its certainly known for being pretty durable.
