Yep, sorry to bring this up again, but after reading the pros and cons of the 2.7 and 3.4 Cayman, I am none the wiser!
I have a £16,000 budget and wanted to know your thoughts on what I should splash out on.

Bore scores and IMS issues keep cropping up, so what's the deal?
it'll be used a daily/second car and needs to be ULEZ (if that's an issue with some cars?). Obviously, it'll be taken out on Sunday mornings for a thrash around the Surrey hills.

I had similar dilemma and bought a gen 1 3.4S with decent engine rebuild. Cheaper than a 2.9 and more firepower.

Scruitinise the bills to make sure it isn't being sold as rebuild when it is just a partial one.

Usually a few for sale at any one time but may need to compromise on colour/spec

Good luck

Pros and cons for both but the only way you'll know is to drive both and make your own mind up. I'm told 2.7s are less prone to bore scoring and have no idea on ULEZ.

I would have thought £16k would get you into a 2.9.

What did your test drives lead you to think?

Thread on same predicament ...

Not really, not unless it has close to 100k miles. Decent ones much under 80k mileage are closer to £20k.

I tested both, found the 3.4 had much harder suspension and was much less comfortable on average British roads. 2.7 felt more nimble, but that might have been tyres / setup / etc. No doubt the 3.4 was quicker, but it didn't 'feel' significantly quicker, so I went for a good 2.7 and didn't regret it.

Of the 2.7 and 3.4, which one has the IMS and Bore Score issues?

I have a 2.7 Cayman and previously as 986 3.2. I would take the 2.7 everyday on UK roads. Ample power and agility, which likes to be reved. Yes the 5 speed box requires a lot of input, but I find that part of the charm. Mine is Meteor Grey and only ever serviced at Porsche throughout its 15years. I love driving it but I'm now tentatively thinking of selling to get something more practical for family life.

Forget IMS, non issue on any Cayman, they all post date the introduction of the final big bearing.

Bore scoring is a 3.4 issue. Not impossible on a 2.7, but infrequent enough to disregard.
