I have the opportunity to acquire a 2005 Boxster S, 987.1.

Plus points:
40K miles
Sound mechanically
Cheap price

Bad points:
It's a tiptronic!!!
Has a lot of London parking dings and scuffs.

Without going in to further detail, I am considering it as a replacement for my vRS track day car.

Obviously, I need a manual so the question is:
What is involved in converting to manual.
Approx cost?
Availability of the parts?

Am thinking, box, gear linkage, cables and gear lever etc.
ECU,

The crank spigot may be different on a tip, don't know...

Happy to do all the work myself as I have a decent garage with a 2 post lift.

Hi,

They are not rare cars by any means so you'd be able to find a manual one if you wanted, most likely for the same price or less than the trip tropic + conversion you are considering at the moment in my opinion smile

Not much help but I'm fairly sure this is the conclusion you will come to in the end.

Cheers,
Dunc

Just considering the conversion if I can get the car for about 3K, the low mileage and the fact that it is a one owner car...

Have seen these sort of questions here before. It's always unfeasibly expensive to make the kind of conversion you're talking of.

Am sure someone's done it, but virtually everyone finds a car with the gearbox they want. Sorry.

but it would end up being a two owner Frankenstein. That you are going to ruin its originality makes the amount of previous owners inconsequential.

Fair enough...

Just thought as I was going to use it as a track day car...

This reminds me of an episode of wheeler dealers when they converted an SMG M3 to manual. It was relatively easy as the gearbox was effectively an automated version of the manual anyway. The holes for the new pedal box were already in situ if I remember correctly.

Is the tiptronic an automated version of the manual?

I have an S which I use for the odd, "better" track days. Really brilliant on track hence my questions...

It seems that this will require a lot of work and money so won't be a starter...

Why not buy it, get it looking smart and then sell it? Use the money towards buying a manual.

Agree with the above. If it is reasonably good only 40k miles and you can tidy a bit for moderate outlay you should be able to make a nice profit on £3k.

Highly unlikely for a track day car!

The involvement on track, changing gear, heeling and toeing and the total involvement of a manual can’t be beaten.

And if you don’t want it I would be very interested (genuinely) at that price. I’ve got a 987 tiptronic (albeit a 2.7) - although a manual would obviously be preferable, the tip works as my wife also uses it and it gets used for commuting. To be fair I only Troy Queef a small percentage of the time.

Ah. That’s why I do track days! Pointless flexing the cars muscles generally on the road!

Stick some AMG paddles on the steering wheel and see how you get on with it?

Clocks are different. The wiring looms for the engine will be different. There will be lots of modules that are looking for the gearbox ecu on the canbus. Could have ABS /PSM faults.

It is a bargain, you are best off buying it, sell it on for a profit. Use the money to buy a manual.
