Hi,

A 4 inch crack has appeared on my window screen (981 GT4). Called my insurance and they handed me over to National Windowscreens. I've yet to speak to the local garage, but I'm informed I can request for them to use and genuine porsche screen. However I'm concerned around calibration of the dab ariels and things like rain sensors.

Speaking to the local OPC they said they would need to do that really.

I'm also concerned it will effect the warranty (at least around those parts).

Looking for advice if anyone been through this.
Thanks

My OPC will arrange to have the replacement done at their workshop by their preferred installer which happily for me is allowed by my insurer

There should be no issue with calibration on a third party screen as these national window fitters know how to do it. It’s not a dark art.

If you want an original screen fitting then I suspect you’ll have to pay the difference. I can’t see how warranty will be affected?

I am sure that some of these fitters do an acceptable job, but some do not so its a gamble. They also fit 'patterned' glass which is a copy of original glass. Personally I would always want original Porsche glass fitted in my car, but I'm fussy about these things. And by the time you've paid the insurance excess for a preferred fitter and registered a claim on your insurance that sits there for 5 years, it may be easier to just bypass the insurance and pay for it yourself. Which is what I chose in the end.

Depending on what area of the country you are in I would highly recommend Glasstec Automotive (Paul). glasstecpaul.com. He has a PH profile on here called Glassman.

He works on all car brands but is also an expert on Porsche's. He can source original Porsche glass and his workmansship, professionalism and attention to detail is second to none.

He has fixed a couple of windscreen stone chips on my cars and recently fitted a new screen on my Cayman R. After seeing all the trim and other bits needing to be stripped out to do the work, I am very pleased I used him. He also does the windcreen work for JZM Porsche who had also recommended him to me.

Good luck in getting it sorted.

Depending on where you're based OP - I'd vouch for Glassman here from PH as well.

Had mine done by autowindscreens a couple of weeks ago. I've got the LED lights, rain sensor etc

Not only were they spot on, but the guy was kind enough to add an adhesive pad and cut it to shape for the mount I had for a camera so i could re-use it, and they had to work around some bullet cams and a datalogger install

I guess it all depends on the person doing the work, but my experience was very good, and it's a very standard process for calibration

Another nod for Glassman/Glasstec Paul from me also.
Replaced my 981 GT4 windscreen with brand new OE parts couple months back.

Have you spoken to your insurer about having an OPC do the replacement? Most policies have something like £50 excess for their approved installer, and £70-80 excess for using your own installer.

I’ve done this several times. Normally you just pay your installer and then forward the invoice to the insurance company who refund you minus the excess.

May be worth checking your policy, or giving them a call.

I'm currently in the middle of helping a chap who bought an Audi, and the camera function isn't working. He took the car into Audi and they handed the car back to him stating that a non-genuine windscreen was the cause of the issue. A couple of months ago a LR Evoque camera wouldn't calibrate and that too was due to a non genuine windscreen. We replaced it with a genuine one and everything worked perfectly immediately.

It's a common problem; the ADAS calibration cannot be completed in many cases simply down to the parts not being genuine.

More info on the subject here (blog).

I had my screen replaced by National Windscreens in April and they used genuine glass (Sekuirt IIRC) that they had sourced from a local OPC.

DAB and wipers worked okay afterwards smile

I did have to take it to one of their branches rather than getting it fixed on the driveway.

What you end up paying will depend on your insurer.

When I had the windscreen replaced on my Porsche I spoke to my insurance company stating that the screen was a part of the structure being bonded in.

In addition it was a specialist job and I didn't want their windscreen partner to install it. They agreed, on the proviso that I paid for it myself and they would then reimburse the cost. So I have a Porsche screen, with the appropriate part number and logo.

DAB/radio diversity are simply plugged in connections although many can seem to click them all the way home!

There aren't that many cars that are depot jobs. The only reason you had to take yours is because they can spend more time on it/have several guys work on it and do things you probably wouldn't approve of if you saw it (like the Cayman R at a very well known OPC; their sub contractor 'weighted' the windscreen down with a 25-litre drum of glass cleaner, and it still wasn't right).
