So, my new Cayman is all ready to collect but - frustratingly - I’m unavailable to get it for another week or so. Being the impatient chap I am, I want to find out everything I can about it in advance… I’ve never actually seen the car in person (I know) but am totally comfortable with the condition and history. Having been agonising over the photos I’ve got of it so far, I wondered if anyone could confirm what the single button on the centre console might be in the picture below? No idea from my online searches.

The car also seems to have two gold plaques on the inside. One on the centre console and one over on the passenger dash - I assume these aren’t factory fit for any sort of special edition (this is a base 2.7 car) so would be interested if anyone had any suggestions as to what they are?

cheers!

Ooh, while I’m at it… any guesses on the head unit make/model?

Looks aftermarket to me - I've never seen it on any 987.

Boxsters do have a roof switch on the centre console, but it's behind the ashtray and not the same type of switch.

The 'official' options list get additional buttons between the spoiler and PSM buttons you have there. Yours has the extended leather option as well.

I have seen the 'passenger airbag off' light installed where your button is, but it's not that either.

Does it have NOS or neons or an ejector seat? biggrin

Interested to know when you get it.

You joke but I honestly wouldn’t rule any of these ideas out. The previous owner appears to have spent good money on the car: owned it since new, full OPC/Specialist history and a load of preventative maintenance, but also had extremely bad different taste. I’ve had to have a whole load of exterior bits and pieces returned to factory colour from the silver they were had been changed to and don’t even get me started on the badges.

I have a weird (horrible) suspicion it might have something to do with lighting up those gold plaques. Fingers crossed it’s just for releasing the NOS eh?

Do you mean the button between the vents? Isn't that the hazard switch, at least on factory cars?

No it’s the little rocker switch just in front of the gear stick on the console.

Retro fit front parking sensor on off switch would be my guess, I've seen similar switches in other cars but in different locations.

Best guess so far! It does look to have front sensors!

Yep, my guess would also be for aftermarket sensors or loud exhaust switch.

What the gold plaques are is anyone’s guess (Ronnie Pickering sat here?). Do tell when you pick it up?

Can you ask the dealer/seller about the switch and plaques?

I think the gold plaque says “Danger, do not operate the small rocker switch while the car is in motion, or stationary “ smile

The gold plaque is just a reminder of what car I’m in.

Hopefully that will come off without a fight!

I hope so, but fear it wont. The plastics have a thin rubberised coating on them which tends to peel and scratch without a second thought, i fear your glued badges will make a mess of it, might be better to leave them on.

But if it does make a mess when you peel it off you can always stick a plaque or something similar over it to cover it up.

Or ejector seat, depending on which way you rock it.

Careful now!
