Hi all,

Intermittently, on start-up, the Cayman (987.1 S) is making a squealing noise. This happens on cold and warm starts and probably occurs on in 15 starts.

Hopefully the attached video captures it clearly enough on here…

anyone know what this is and what I should do!?

It doesn’t look like the audio works in my video. I’ve subsequently found out it’s the starter motor. The link below (at 40 seconds in) is the exact noise I’m experiencing.

So now my question is, bearing in mind the car is 6 weeks old (to me) and is still within the 6 month warranty - what should I be expecting/asking from the specialist I purchased it from?

That’s my question. Would it be a fix or replacement?

I would be happy with a fix. Starters are not very complicated (sorry to misunderstand the question), but it depends a little on what's bust. I wouldn't sweat it and let them decide how to do it

No apology needed! I didn’t pose my question very well. Your thoughts are very much appreciated.

I expect it might just need some graphite lubrication. I think it is the bearing spinning after the engine starts and the flywheel spins faster than the starter…vag stuff on the 20v 1.8t seem to get the same.

The serpentine belt can squeal horribly when its worn, or the tensioners not working. It's not a big job to change it.

I’m a little late to the party here. I got my Boxster S last week and it was making the same noise. There’s two mind sets here, as either way the starter has to come out.

Replacing it would give you a nice new starter, but they’re expensive. Or, strip and lube. I chose option 2. Took it out, stripes it down, lubed her up and back in. Cost £0.00

Thanks all. The starter motor was replaced under warranty. Issue resolved!
