Any thoughts or experience on this noise...

Surely this can't be right...?

Which engine is it?? And exactly where is the noise coming from?

It's a 2.7 that noise is from the oil filler cap.

Don't tend to hear it other wise, but am having smoke on start up now, hence the checking of the oil filler cap

Smoke on start-up isn't that unusual, especially if the car has stood for a while. Mine's quite embarrassing when I first start it after its winter hibernation. 2.7s aren't known for major issues in Gen 1 form, so the usual suspect for noises like this and oil consumption is very unlikely.

Is it using any significant amount of oil?

Could be, although hard to tell from the position where it's filmed. They're usually a slow-ish tick, that disappears after you take the car for a good B road thrash smile

Not using oil, but smoking definitely worse and more frequent than the past 4 years.

Drives and idles just fine.

Ill have to try and compare the noise with another.. but it sounds very rough.

Time for some investigation I guess.

Cars aren't designed to be run with the oil cap removed. Positive crank case ventilation ensures that oil vapour and blow-by gases get returned to the engine and burnt. What you have recorded may be nothing more than normal chuffing with the cap removed.

What does the car sound like with the cap on?

+1. Nothing particularly standout in that recording obvious to me, aside from hearing the internals of cylinder heads is unnaturally loud first time you hear it. I can hear all tappets and valves tapping relatively evenly on all 6 cylinders, which is the bulk of engine noise that should be audible. If blow-by is excessive, I can't hear that any cylinder is worse than another. Definitely can't hear any sticky hydraulic tappets. I'd just use it and keep an eye on oil consumption as long as there was nothing obviously audible while driving the car. (My almost brand new 718 occasionally has a noisy tappet or 2 for the first 2 or 3 miles in the morning, goes as soon as the oil temperature starts to rise.)

That noise is normal with the oil cap off; you essentially have an ear funnel pointed directly to the crank carrier. Put the cap back on; make sure the cap cover is clicked home properly and carry on.

As an aside on the 'running oil level' cars we usually top them up whilst running too (cuts the measuring time down drastically) - the noises as you tip the oil in are something to behold!
