Hi all,

I am considering selling my 996 Carrera and one of the replacement options is a 987.2 Cayman or Boxster. I keep a vague eye on cars for sale and can’t help but notice that despite limited availability, they seem to hang about.

Any ideas why this may be, or experience that goes against what I am seeing? I don’t want to buy a car to late money, but equally don’t want to buy a car that I can’t move on!

ultimately it'll come down to price. If its priced fair then it'll sell. The tidy ones we post up on https://www.caymanoc.com/forums/topic/2742-tidy-98...

One highlighted this week sold within days. the good ones go quick, there is a lot of nondescript ones around at perhaps questionable prices - i don't think its anymore scientific a reason than that.

This one sold yesterday on CC . I bid on it but with the 6% buyers premium it was just a little too high for a casual purchase.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I know it ultimately comes down to price but there are seems to be a lot of cars at the £25k mark and they all have sat for a while. I need to look harder I guess to move quickly on the right cars.

Any thoughts on the below that has been for sale since August as an example? It is interesting to know what buyers of certain models look at even if these cars are not exactly what I would go for.

Or this one:

Sorry about the links, it is fiddly on my phone.

Spec. Spec. spec.

Porsche having so many options do get expensive new so the temptation is always there to skimp on options which come resale time will bite.

No PCM/Chrono/PSE/PASM cars will always take a while. A pdk with no chrono on a 987 would be a tough sell but a fully optioned car is always going to be easy to sell and for a premium price.

I've had the same looking for a gt3 there are loads around but all of them have got something wrong with the Spec. The most bizarre one is having the folding buckets in 991 cars instead of 918 seats. Totally bizarre Spec.

I have noticed a few lately that have hung around. It seems like a lot of them are towards the £27-29k mark for a 987.2 Cayman S.

I am considering putting my one up for sale soon but not quite sure where to price it yet, if you’re interested please PM and let me know. Black, Manual, PSE, full Porsche history, Bose, Sports plus seats and lots of other nice bits 56k miles.

Yeah, that's the same car. At the original advertised price of £27k I think it was a good buy. It's where I'd have put my money in this crazy market as the equivalent 997.2 would have cost you £45k.

I'm guessing the dealer paid £26k. Red sells.

Thanks all, good to hear. I was just worried that no one wanted to buy them and I would be stuck with a car in a year or twos time!

I know that the Porsche market is one of the most spec sensitive, I will be conscious regarding options on potential purchases.

I really think what you're seeing is cars that were priced too high coming into winter when the market definitely cooled and sellers not being realistic.

I think a well spec'd manual 987.2 will most importantly be a great car to own and drive...secondly it will be sought after as they made only a fraction of them compared to 987.1 manuals. I doubt you'd be left holding one if you need to shift it, just price it realistically.

Gen 2 they fixed the chocolate engine. Everybody knows this so people ask the earth for them price wise. Hydraulic steering great engine. Apart from the 987.2 R or spider which demand silly money.

So my guess is people ask to much so they hand around.

Hi, I have just paid near £28k for one from Dovehouse which is manual with good mileage, history and all the toys I wished for. I have not owned a Porsche since I was 25 some 25 years ago! I absolutely love it and really don’t care too much if it loses a few grand in 2/3 years time, life is short.

Nice! congratulations. Dovehouse always seem to have really nice 987's for sale, and present them very well online.

I saw that Red one as it was close to me.

The write up indicated a petrol head and it had a few things sorted recently like the air con condensers.

Yes that’s the on, drives lovely and pulls like a train. I changed from an Exige and tbh I’m really impressed with the caymans handling and torque.

Here's link for anyone else.

That's a really solid buy at that price from a dealer with full leather, sports seats, PSE, BiXenon. Good to see not all dealers are deluded!

Fabulous car for a really good price! Except for full leather and Bose, mine looks exactly like that. I think about switching to a 911 all the time, but whenever I open the garage I change my mind. I would miss it too much.

Thanks, I’ve been looking for a while and most that come to the market have very basic options but still command a high price. The car will get used at every opportunity and driven with a big smile.
