What’s the difference between the 987.1 2.7 to 981 2.7?

987.1 2.7 got upgraded to 2.9, why in the 981 did they go back 2.7?

I think the answer lies in horsepower outputs and engine design/technology.

The 2.9 wasn't a DFI engine but it was introduced on the 2.7 in the 981

Just interesting how they moved from 2.7 to 2.9 to 2.7

CO2 and other stuff, didn't need to be as big.

As someone else said the non S 987.2 didn't get the DFI engine until the 981.

I would be amazed if the wikipedia page didn't give a nice break down as to why.

That bit is a mystery. It is not like the 2.9 is a stretch of the original 2.7, but a completely new motor, because it did away with the intermediate shaft.

performance car manufacturer's sales departments use HP ratings, displacement numbers and 0-60 times as like garnishes on food to steer them to and/or away from models with lessor profit margins.

That is true, but normally they don’t get a say in whether there is a totally new engine in a model.

An engine with a short life because it was replaced with the 2.7 DFI unit after only 5 years.

I can only assume it shares a lot of its architecture with one of the other engines, but I don’t know which one.

ETA: it seems the 2.9 is actually a variant of the 2.7 DFI motor. It is the MA1.20 in 2.9 variant and MA1.22 in 2.7 variant.

So it seems like the change to DFI was planned early, but maybe wasn’t ready for the 987.2 so they stretched it slightly to get the power target maybe?
