Cayman 718 advice for a newcomer
Discussion
Long been drawn to Cayman 718s. Increased prices and limited choice has sent me 'spiralling' up and considering buying new. However, given the times I am concerned about value retention. Would appreciate any advice; should I just keep looking for a used 2/3/4... year old model, or go new and if so consider finance which would give a guaranteed value at the end of the term? Is Porsche finance recommended? Any thoughts would be appreciated. P
It’s all about personal preference really.
Some will find it disagreeable to pay ‘new’ money for a ‘used’ 718 (or any current Porsche for that matter) and would rather wait a long time to have their perfect spec. Others will happily pay over the odds to have their new toy ASAP. Neither is right or wrong as long as you are happy with your choice.
New purchases are popular at present as the difference between used and new prices is so slim, and new has the added benefit of a warranty, no MOT and no service costs for a few years.
As for Porsche finance, very easy, convenient and simple to set up but you will probably find slightly cheaper via a third party lender.

If you want to retain the most value then you need to buy privately - a car that's less than 3 but has been maintained by Porsche will still have factory warranty for some piece of mind, you can then extend this.
The problem at the moment is that used prices are sky high - and private sellers largely expect to be able to sell at dealer prices - so finding a private car at a sensible price is basically impossible.
Remember that any used car from Porsche is going to have significant margin in it that you're going to lose instantly.

Doesn't need to be serviced by Porsche if <3 years old, just has to be done to Porsche standards (not hard) and using OE materiel. The problem at the moment is that used prices are sky high - and private sellers largely expect to be able to sell at dealer prices - so finding a private car at a sensible price is basically impossible.

Budget? Personally I don’t associate the terms “value retention” and “buying new”.
Porsche finance currently has quite a high interest rate compared to others like BMW, Renault. I was quoted 5.9% for a new Cayman. Currently paying 2.9% on my BMW.
Given the strong second hand values, I think it comes down to whether you can wait. If you can, then you get a new car to your exact spec and the full warranty. For not a huge amount more than a second hand car.

Thanks for all the comments. They indicate that others see the situation similarly to myself. That the price of used (say under 4 years) Caymans is such that one finds oneself considering stretching a little further and buying new.Like another responder I have spoken to Porsche and found that buying would be a matter of joining a long queue,-another issue in itself. My additional concern is the uncertainty/ possible detrimental effect that climate measures may have on the value of the car, hence my consideration of finance options. All that said I remain very interested and will continue to try to work out the best way to do it.....

I assume you have test drove a 718 and a 981, to reach your decision. I won't throw the 987 in the mix as I can foresee you are taken with the more modern looking, but if you haven't tried a 981 you should to compare against your 718 drive drive. And how was the test drive then?sw67 said:
I am also new to Porsche - I have wanted one for years. I had a test drive in a 2018 car that was only £3k cheaper than a new one.
I have ordered a new one with the same spec for delivery next summer.
It sounds like we are treading similar ground. Hope your new car thrills. All the best....I have ordered a new one with the same spec for delivery next summer.
