Adding Carplay - Impact appeal?
Discussion
Hi all
I'm looking at possibly getting Apple car play installed on my 981 Boxster. I'm split because even though I don't want to sell the car anytime soon, I wondered if it would impact the resale ability. I know that having it fitted means it'll never be able to have Porsche Warranty and would probably turn off most enthusiastic and pure fans of the brand. But do you think it would turn off a lot of people?
Thoughts?

I installed CarPlay in my 2013 Cayenne. I have considered sale time and plan on removing it before listing. Having CarPlay has made a huge difference to my car and is likely the reason I still have the car. But, looking from the outside, even I might be worried about what other modifications have been made to the car so that is why I will remove it.
Thanks for the guidance and links.
I called Porsche and the classic communication upgrade is for older cars. Good spot though, didn't know that existed.
Having more of a dig around. I found a company in London called Sextons who've fitted a number of nmautomotive units to the existing PCM. Its apparently a tricky job as it involves opening up the unit itself. Although they can put in a reversing camera (which would help as I don't have sensors)
Not looking to increase value of the car, more my day to day enjoyment.

Just added Apple Carplay to my 981 CGTS. Bought the unit direct from the Joyeauto store on Aliexpress. There are a few good YouTube videos of how to fit it. It is definatley worth while and made my car even more enjoyable to drive now I can have full control of Spotify and google maps etc. It connects wirelessly or by cable. You add an additional circuit board to the PCM and a new external box I hid in the passenger foot well under the carpet. If you remove the external box later they will never know that it has been installed and therefore should not effect any later added warranties. Only if the PCM actually failed and Porsche then took it apart would they discover the circuit board inside. I would definitely recommend you fit it - for you. Don't worry about the impact it may have on resale (which will most likely be zero anyway). Most 981 buyers now and especially in a few years time will be less concerned about Porsche aftermarket warranty anyway.
Thanks for the info.
If you don’t mind, would you be able to add the links of where you bought it and the YouTube videos? It would help greatly. I know I could find them myself, but would be good to know what you used and would refer.
In my younger days I did quite a few audio installs for myself and my friends. But that’s in the older days when everything was either single or double din.
Thanks

I'd definitely recommend the NM Automotive unit as you can get UK based support as well as very detailed installation instructions (almost identical install to the JoyeAuto unit). I've had both the JoyeAuto and NM Automotive versions (albeit for a 987.2 rather than 981) and while the installation is mostly the same, the latter just feels a better engineered solution (e.g. no need to tap into a fuse for power, better sound quality and less flicking back and forward between the OEM user interface and the CarPlay one when starting the car, etc.). I also had flickering with the JoyeAuto unit and their support was non-existent (hence why I also bought the NM one), although I've not heard of any similar problems on the 981 version. Either are great upgrades without losing the OEM look and easily removed if need be. If you're comfortable fitting car stereos or building / upgrading PCs then it's pretty straightforward to do yourself.

Sextons fitted the NM Automotive unit to my GT4 and the Panamera I had before that. They also added a reversing camera to the GT4 at the same time. I get why a track focussed car ought not to have parking sensors and a rev cam, but bloody hell you miss them in an urban setting if you’ve become used to having them. No question seems too trivial for NM Auto. Sextons know what they are doing; don’t worry on that score.
I did both cars for me and not for the next owner. I didn’t/don’t expect them to have an impact at sale time. Both cars were out of OPC warranty and I’m not really interested in playing the Porsche OPC warranty game, so that wasn’t an issue for me.
I used the Panny for about a month before putting in the Carplay unit, trying out PCM 3.0. My considered verdict: PCM 3.0 is st (sorry to any PCM fans!). Carplay is far from perfect but it is light years ahead of 3.0. Carplay went into the GT4 within a day or two of buying it.

This is the one I bought, took 2 weeks to arrive https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32965636597.html?s...If you don’t mind, would you be able to add the links of where you bought it and the YouTube videos? I hid the new mic in the steering column next to the factory mic (as per the Test Drive Scotland install video). I spent more time scratching my head deciding on where to hide the cables than the actual physical install (probably 2 hours work max, +4 hours head scratching ) Can't compare it with the NMAutomotive version which maybe a better solution, but I have had no issues with screen flicker and it sounds great. I used 3M velcro to stick the new external box to the side of the transmission tunnel in the passenger footwell behind the carpet so that it was not touching any other existing cables etc. (In the Test Drive Scotland video above he attaches it on to the main loom which includes the thick main power cables, this is not the best idea as the power cables could cause noise etc to the signals). It was also easy to tuck the remaining adapter cable lengths in the same place under the unit to the side out the way. I connected the power fuse adapter to the 'rear wiper' fuse socket in the fuse box in the passenger foot well, (I do not have a rear wiper on my car) as this is a switched live rather than permanent. Everything works perfectly

I just finished fitting the joyeauto box to my 2014 boxster S with PCM3.1 that has digital/ state its radio and Bose.
-> the previously linked videos are helpful and the task itself is not too difficult if you are calm and methodical. Installing the circuit board inside thenPcM was one of the easier jobs.
Problems/ snags I had
1) I had to dremel a hole in the rear of the PCM metal carcass as unlike in the videos mine seems to have umpteen aerial input things so no natural hole or blanking plate
2) when I first put it back together I had not secured one of the tape-wire things properly so the PCM display wasn’t working. Nervous! I just had to go back a step and check. All was well
3) I unwrapped some of the original harness to PCM to allow freer movement of the wires to the rear of PCM and the patch-in harness
4) when I had it working on screen I lost sound and when I plugged PCM straight back into the car OEMmllug it worked.
5) that’s because you have to transfer the Bose fibre optic cables from the original OEM plug into the joyeauto plug that goes into the rear of PCM. Simple to do- just release a small lock tab- but very little mention of that in any online videos I saw.
6) I installed the box under the steering wheel to the LHS where your left knee is, meaning it has ventilation and little proximity to other cables which some have reported creating interference.
7) I plugged the power into RHS footwell fuse box lower row which are switched with ignition (check with a multi meter)
So- it’s a bit fiddly, I got a few cuts and scrapes poking about but essentially it’s not that hard if you take it easy, watch the vids in advance and check at each stage.
As for OP question: in my opinion if there were 2 identical cars for sale and one had CarPlay, I’d buy that one!
