As a newish Spyder owner I’m confused by press that couldn’t have been more effusive about the engine in this and the GT4 and people grumbling on the internet about it’s supposed reluctance to rev and also the flat spot. What’s the general consensus - is the 3.8 in the Spyder and GT4 really that strangled (compared with 991S)?

I wouldn’t say it feels that strangled. It doesn’t quite pull to the redline like some of their other motors but it’s still very enjoyable.

I think it’s possible to turn the downsides into positives of a sort, too! After the flat spot comes a rapid build in torque which means it really comes alive around those middle revs. The drop off after 6500rpm means that 1000 or so rpm left can be enjoyed quite easily because they don’t introduce a lot more load into the car.

It's mapped differently in the Spyder, plus the style of car means you don't feel the need to wrestle every single bhp out of it.

I've driven both and thought the Spyder was pretty nice and makes a lovely road car and the GT4 not good enough for a GT product. Others think the GT4 is fine.

YMMV and all that!

I've also owned both and the power delivery felt better in the Spyder for whatever reason. Still one of my favourite road cars I've ever owned.
