Given that we have a similar thread about 981s, I wonder if the current number of used 718 GT4s for sale (15 or so on PH, 24 on AT) is relevant to popularity, current prices and residuals. It certainly seems that 981s are being snapped up on the used market during these slightly odd post-lockdown times, whereas the 718s seem to sticking. Do we think supply is now above demand and if so, are prices likely to soften. With 981 residuals being so strong, it’s a unique situation whereby the ‘older’ variant appears to be more desirable than the current model which may in turn keep the prices up on 718s. Clearly all spec and mileage dependant.

Food for thought I guess.

I see 18 cars in the OPC network right now, and I think several things are in play:
  • 6 of the 18 are comfort spec, which with the GTS 4.0 on the scene meaning they could be seen as an ugly duckling.
  • Prices are currently very strong for lots of used cars, cashing in will be very attractive for some people.
  • Reviews have not been raving for the 718 GT4, they've mostly claimed it doesn't move the game on much and isn't that much faster than the 981 GT4.
  • Reviewers have in the main stated that they prefer the 981 GT4 as it's the first, it's rawer, it sounds better etc.
  • 981s are cheaper.
  • 981s are out of warranty, so modifications become more attractive.
  • Some people will be holding out for a new car allocation rather than buying used.
  • Some buyers have moved to the GTS 4.0 instead if they want a new or nearly new car.
Demand for both types of GT4 will always be strong, but will they reach pricing parity on a like-for-like car? Time will tell but I don't think so. I can't see either derivative dropping substantially in the near future.

I was out with a 981 GT4 over the weekend and the owner commented on the perceived differences in torque between the two. (3rd point)

I think as time goes on people will realise just how much better the 718 GT4 engine is when comparing stock vs stock cars.

I'm seeing more and more 981 GT4s getting engine mods, which confirms what I've been saying for years!

Really interesting point on the warranty v mods, one which I hadn’t even considered. What are the popular/accessible mods in the UK? I’d always lusted after the Sharkwerks kit but assume that’s not a player over here?

You can essentially do what Porsche did with the Clubsport car and add the X51 kit - change the intake, cams(?), headers, exhaust and remap. The cars are then good for 430-450bhp.

Any decent Porsche experts should be able to do it.
