I’m looking at a 987 S to replace my 4 series as I am doing significantly fewer miles now and fancy scratching the itch.

Is the Tiptronic a normal torque converter auto with manual override, or something else? And how many ratios? 6 presumably?

I am pretty set on a manual, but interested in views.

Up until 987.2 it was a slush box with 5 gears.

It is quite smart though, and although widely derided I thought it very good, especially in the latest versions.

Had a 987 Boxster S tip.

It’s not a patch on the 987.2 onwards PDK though

Had a tiptronic in my 56 plate Cayenne and it suited that lazy 4.5 V8 waft very well. Didn’t respond amazingly well to being hustled but then it was a 2.3 tonne beast with air suspension so just sit back and enjoy the ride.

My main stipulation for my Boxster when I switched was a manual gearbox as the car is just so nimble. The tiptronic isn’t as sharp as the manual and it would lessen my enjoyment of the car. Heard good things about the PDK but tiptronic isn’t anywhere near good enough in my book.

If the choice is only Tiptronic V manual than I would have the manual, the Tiptronic does do the job but to enjoy a sportscar you need a little more than that.

Had the choice been PDK V anything, I would have the PDK every time, it is streets ahead of other equivalents (DSG etc) and works well in all scenarios.

I don't particularly like autos in a sportscar but I have to say I have been won over by the PDK.

Thanks all, I'm very much inclined towards the manual but might have to try a PDK, depending on where they sit in budget terms.

I’d say it depends what you’re using it for. PDK is the best auto in the industry, but Porsche manuals are some of the finest examples, too..

The manual gearbox in Boxster really adds to the experience. You buy the car for its control weights. Well I do smile
