I've decided I'm going to move into the realms of owning a Porsche.

After extensive reading I'd like to go with a GT4, it's only going to be a weekend vehicle.

Current production lead times delays aside..... Will a Porsche centre sell me one?

Bit of research suggests that they don't sell the GT cars to people who are unknowns.

Also do I believe the rumours the order book is closed ?

My only experience with Porsche is a test drive with a Taycan last year, but ultimately I couldn't justify one.

I've created a build and emailed to the sales person I spoke to last year so I will report back but I'm curious as a newbie to Porsche.

I might be able to help if you want a slot. DM me if you want.

Possibly, it certainly can't hurt to ask. If the order books are closed, combined with the semiconductor shortage your best best might be to go for a cancelled order. While you won't be able to spec it yourself, it may match up to what you would have wanted anyway, and then at least you're not paying overs on the second hand market.

Good luck with your search.

Local Porsche centre called me earlier and said they can sell me a GT4, but each dealer only gets so many slots.

You've got to pay a deposit down and the earliest you'll probably get your own build is middle of 2022, perhaps if lucky a bit quicker with a cancelled order slot or transfer your deposit a low mileage second hand that comes along.

(I'm sure you all know this)

So it seems they aren't closing the order book which is encouraging!

There may some opportunities if you’re happy with a rebuilt engine. A number of people have cancelled GT4s that are already at dealers because of the conrod issue. I believe they have an extended warranty of 6 years on the engine. See the Conrod thread for details.

No, that's 'Conn rods'. rolleyes

Nice that one can maybe get hold of a new GT4 (if indeed one wanted one).

I already had a 981 Boxster and wanted to upgrade to a 718 Spyder, tried two OPCs both basically laughed at me and said no.

Had to have a comprehensive buying history with the OPC to get enough points to get on the ladder, just moved on, sold the Boxster and took my business elsewhere, simples.

No, that’s ‘connecting rods’ if we’re being pedantic. wink

Good luck securing a car.

But production will end this Summer for both the GT4 and Spyder so you would be better either trying to secure a cancelled order or buying used.

I’m not sure the 718 Spyder is an upgrade. The 981 was perfect for the road.

I'd be interested to know the thinking behind being able to justify a GT4 but not being able to justify a Taycan.

Maybe but only because of the delays caused by parts supply issues affecting Porsche and most other manufacturers and engine issues specifically with the 718.

My OPC along with others have advised September will likely be the last month for production.

They're speculating, and from my sources... they're wrong. Production still planned to carry on well into 2022 at the moment, notwithstanding a change of plan of course given the semiconductor and other parts shortages.

It's astounding how people who turn up at dealerships with real money to spend are actually able to buy cars.

I'd still take a GTS.

Once you factor in the production closure in August in Germany it seems they have (at least in the short - medium term) they are struggling to meet production targets. The next generation Cayman will be a change in platform so they are probably thinking of bringing forward the next phase of development.

Hopefully anyone waiting get's an allocation.
