Sport Chrono clock reflections
Discussion
Anyone know an easy way (fuse?) to disable the light on the sport chrono clock in a 718?
At night it reflects badly in the windscreen and is quite distracting, I usually end up covering it with a cloth!
Even during the day the shiny silver surround reflects in the screen, common sense would say to make it dark and unreflective. I wonder if it can be swapped for a black surround like the leather dash it sits on?
In my brother's new Spyder it gets condensation inside and steams up.
It has to be one of the most pointless and ill thought out parts of the car's design. I can't even say I've ever used it as seeing the time from it is harder than just glancing at the various screens with the time on.
I noticed that on the 718 GT4 it is not standard and has to be optioned at around £350, but in the Spyder (and GTS) it is standard.
Could even tempt me to trade for a PDK GT4 just to get rid of the damn thing, if Porsche would release one and anyone would allow me to buy one! That would make it a very expensive option delete...

If you took the expensive route and plumped for a pdk GT4 would you still not want chrono so as to get the sports+ function?
In both my 981 and 718 I only used the Sports+ to see what it did, and then went back to Sports and/or manual control of PDK.With the GT4 the £336 Chrono Package option only adds the stupid clock and a stopwatch and performance display in PCM, which I can well live without.

The cabling preparation for lap trigger implements support for the lap trigger available separately from Porsche Tequipment for automated and highly precise lap timing control. The results can then be analysed and compared on your smartphone thanks to the Porsche Track Precision app offered as standard
I'd pay £336 to get rid of the clock! I agree that that the 718 Sport chrono clock is badly designed and reflects badly in the windscreen, I can’t believe that someone at Porsche signed this off given the focused driving nature of the brand. Screen reflections are a big no no
I am also looking for some sort of solution. I notice that 911s have a little cap over the clock to stop the reflection but the other models don’t. I will follow this thread carefully

Correct, but that little cap does not fully prevent a reflection on the screen. That said, the reflection is in such a position that you tend to ignore it.
I just got my 718 Boxter S, which came with Sport Chrono. I’m not a fan of the clock in general and especially not of the reflections. I plan to remove and replace with a blank panel. However, I think that the part number proposed in the previous post is incorrect. My research shows that the description of that panel is “with clock.” The one “without clock” looks to be: 982-858-189-D-5Q0. Note the E is changed to a D.
I take it you can’t tell the time then, is that why you don’t like it, on the grand scale of things people worrying about a reflection of a clock what is the world coming to and at £365 pound option on a £50k plus car, what a problem to have glad I didn’t have to spend that kind of money on a clock that pisses me off

On a non-GT model it's more than just a clock...mr pg said:
Not a problem in a 981 as it's much better positioned (much neater too)! :-)

On my 981 the sports crono clock is not lit up ever, is there anyway off turning it on pleaseIf you took the expensive route and plumped for a pdk GT4 would you still not want chrono so as to get the sports+ function?
I’ve had the clock in 997.2 and Macan. Never paid any attention to it ever. I understand it but in the whole scheme of things, aluminium pedals and all weather matts are more important to me.
It’s classic marketing in the automotive industry alongside the origination of spec naming.
Apart from preferring a simpler design, my issue with the clock is the affect on the centre speaker. Car audio has to be the worst environment for audio anyway, but there are positives to no clock for that centre speaker.

Just my humble opinion sorry
I was just trying to be helpful since someone had mentioned the wrong part number. Apart from that, I would not have registered for the site and posted since honestly I don’t assume anyone cares about my opinion on that or anything else. But to address your points, the time is clearly shown on the instrument cluster and the radio so I don’t need an extra clock to tell time. And I only got the package because the car on the lot came with it; I would never have chosen it if placing an order. However the dealer gave a huge discount on the car so in essence you could say that I really didn’t pay for that option. And the blank panel is very inexpensive.

I wonder if on a 718 with Chrono one could just pull up the clock from the top of the dash... disconnect it... and replace it with a blank from a non-Chrono car. Part number looks to be ... 982 858 189 E 5Q0 ... but do check.
Just a guess.
I have rechecked and, as per mkush's suggestion, the correct part number is 982 858 189 D 5Q0 (for a black interior).Just a guess.

Thanks for that, I may ask OPC how much to supply and fit. If anyone gives it a go please let us know.Geoff
Its a real first world problem but I have to agree. It also bugs me that when you have the lights on, the light symbol reflects on the glass and can be seen in the wing mirror (I am quite tall so maybe this is just me) As someone has already said, how these things get signed off is beyond me.
