A bit worrying. Any other cases ?

I have a base 981, same problem and engine was only 12k miles old - new engine was supplied and fitted in Austria (was doing a road trip when it went), very glad it was under warranty..
Surely if the engine went at 12K miles they would sort it even if it wasn't under warranty, if it has been serviced on time and especially by Porsche. A friends Aston V8VS blew up at 30K miles on the clock and on track......Aston coughed up a large amount. Schmed said:

If you read right through the thread it does look like there were a number of prior issues (eg coil replacements) which might be the root cause of the failure. It doesn't look an isolated issue, but not something that owners ought to be paranoid about.https://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-forum/1091142-...

A couple of things that seem important mentioned in looking after the 9A1 engine or any performance engine are regular oil changes , quality petrol and warming up properly! But you are always going to get a random failure in the modern manufacturing process. A couple of years ago talking to aPorsche technician said this was true of the 9A1 engine no real design issues just random faults like they had a problem with a 997gts which turned out to be a poorly made injector.
In the long term when those motors get to high miles and need an engine refresh or you are thinking about increasing cc then nikasil liners would seem to be the way to go

I’m not the only loitering and curious 86/BRZ owner here I see! Love the Cayman, principally the middle engine and NA F6 really appeals. Didn’t know the 987.2 got the 9A1 engine - duly noted for any purchase considerations in years to come. Happily remain in full honeymoon period with BRZ. The only ennui is the gear ING; will have to suck a see one day

Pretty solid argument for that warranty extension...?

Just checked-out a 981.2 for a friend. Being offered (with CPO) by a Porsche dealer, 30k miles but sounds horrid on tick-over. Sent a sound file to a reputable engine shop, and they confirmed bore scoring. No record of any oil changes over a 2 year/20k mile period, that probably doesn’t help.

Pretty impressive. A model of car that doesn't exist has bore scoring diagnosed without actually looking inside the engine...Twinfan said:

So to sum up, a 981.2 with 30k on the clock with FSH is being being sold by a Porsche OPC with full 24 month warranty with an engine that sounds horrid on tick-over, is that what you are saying?Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
