Boxster 987 3.2s
Discussion
having just sold my 2.7 986 i am thinking of either a 2.7 base Cayman or 987 Boxster, having trolled the forums (for which seems forever) I`m still undecided.
Does the 3.2s have the upgraded ims bearing like the 2006 onwards Caymans and suffer with bore problems like the 3.4s do?
thanks in advanced....

Hi, the 3.2 isn't known for bore scoring. From what I can see on here, the only way to guarantee getting the model with the larger bearing is to buy a late 2006 car onward. As I understand it, the late 2005 /early 2006 cars are the changeover point for the bearing size, but even the chassis number won't tell you which one any given car of that particular age has. It's a gearbox off job allowing a physical examination to know for sure. Does the 3.2s have the upgraded ims bearing like the 2006 onwards Caymans and suffer with bore problems like the 3.4s do?

In short then, it's a bloody minefield!
I went with the 3.2 987 based on what I'd seen you and others post about them with regard to them being perhaps the best compromise for reliability and performance. The seemingly very real threat of bore-scoring made the 3.4 absolutely out of the question for me, unfortunately making a Cayman an unlikely future purchase as they don't do it with the 3.2. Sadly won't get to find out long-term how good the 3.2 would have been, having bought the car in October last year, it was sold yesterday due to unforeseen circumstances regarding a house purchase.
However, should the opportunity arise again, that would still be the model I'd most likely consider.

I can only add what I've found: my mid 2005 987 3.2S had the small single row bearing. As others have said, it's manageable. I've had mine upgraded to something better by the guys at Revolution, so that's something I no longer worry about (at least, not for a few years until the bearing reaches the end of its service life).
Baz from Hartech also confirmed on a different thread that **all** 3.2s, including the 987, have ferrous piston coatings which does make bore score very unlikely compared to the later plastic coated pistons.
