Mine got picked up on the last MOT so I took the car to an OPC as its under warranty...nothing wrong with it and not something the warranty would cover, they said.

3000 miles later and I'm getting a subtle thud from the front driver side wheel when it passes over manhole covers or slight impressions in the road (as opposed to potholes or speed bumps). Also when driving slowly e.g. reversing up my path I can hear it creaking.

I'll try another OPC but should they decline is there any way I can persuade them? I really wanted to get the alignment done soon as my tyres are still quite fresh and I'll have new winter boots fitted in November.

How old and how many miles is the top mount?

27k miles and 5.5 years.

A google search shows its a common fault, plenty of people claim to have had it fixed under warranty.

I've got a similar issue with mine....

Slight play was detected in one of the rear damper 'sliding bushes', noted as an advisory on my 987 in October 2013. I was pretty miffed as the car had a pair of shocks fitted less than 3 years previously by OPC under warranty. Car had only covered 19k miles since & is still under warranty with Porsche until end of year.

I tried to get it sorted under warranty but even with a good relationship with the local OPC, they didn't want to budge, stating it's wear & tear & not covered by warranty. I was a bit disappointed to be honest & even spoke to Reading Porsche who advised it was up to OPC if they wanted to submit a goodwill claim. They didn't.

So I tried another another OPC and they wouldn't even entertain looking at the car, citing the 'acoustic defect' clause in the terms and conditions. Unless it physically drops off and fails the MOT, they aren't interested.

My car needs servicing and the warranty renewing early next year, do you think I'll bother?

Mine were changed under warranty on my 2010 GT3 earlier this year. The dealer couldn't isolate the knocking noise from the top mount or the shocker. The top mounts were replaced under warranty and I replaced the shockers at the same time because if it turned out not to be the mounts I would have to have paid for the warranty labour plus the labour again to change the shockers in order to fix the issue.

The creaking could be the coffin arm or if not a bit of lube sprayed up there inside the arch did the trick on mine when it used to dry out in the summer.
As for the thud, that could be the rear support arm. Get them swapped left to right (they're identical and it's only two bolts any monkey can change) and see if the thud moves to the other side.
