Just recently noticed something that might have always been there and is probably normal...however.... (not an STD question)

My 6 weeks old Cayman 981 makes a fairly faint but noticeable whine when building up revs or after releasing the accelerator in lower gears, in line with the revs building and dropping. I'd say more noticeable at lower speeds and isn't always there. Sounds very much like a normal engine noise I guess, and of course the engine is much closer to you in a Cayman, but wondered if anyone else had noticed it.

FWIW, I get all kinds of drivetrain noise in my Boxster's cabin. In the Turbo's cabin, too. Nothing to give me any concern, though. Normal then. And as you covered because the engine/drivetrain is quite close and in the case of the Boxster (and Cayman) separated by a padded/noise dampened panel/engine cover that does marvels with the noise -- I've been in my Boxster with the panel removed and the engine running... -- but allows more noise through that someone from another car might be accustomed to.

If the car is a new car, or even if it is not just used but still new and therefore a bit of an unknown to you, the noise might be the early signs of some trouble. Without hearing the noise I can't say and even with an audio clip I'm not qualified to offer anything more than my layman's opinion.

Thus note when the noise appears the circumstances under which the noise appears then get the car in for a professional Porsche tech's evaluation. If there is a problem you want this ID'd ASAP. If there is not a problem you want to know this too ASAP so you can resume full enjoyment of your car.

Thanks for the wise words....I'm pretty sure it's normal but am getting it checked just in case.

Every Turbo i've had has had some whine in the drive train perfectly normal.
So did the GT3 for that matter.

Mine does it - sounds like a rubberised drive belt or similar? I assumed it was the PDK box?

Yes I'd say that's about right, and the technician said it was the normal transmission noise. And as I say, it was the same on the other PDK model (actually a Boxster) we tried. I was being overcautious, but the Porsche Centre is only up the road from me and peace of mind is priceless!
