I've been removing perfectly reasonable cars from my short list because they have that god awful rear wiper, I have however since been told that I'm being stupid.

So who should we shoot first, the guy in Stuttgart who came up with the idea or the guy who ticked it as an option?

On a serious note, has anyone removed theirs and replaced it with a blanking plate or body filler?

Strangely, I quite like it on a 911. The fact it adds an 'ordinary' touch to a fairly iconic car is sort of appealing. Not sure I'd both speccing it but wouldn't put me off a used car if I liked the rest of it. Less sure on a Cayman though

I like that when it's pissing down with rain, it allows me to see out of the back window.

Never understood the hate. The rear wiper has been on Porsches from the dawn of time, I really thought people would have got used to it by now...

Most 911 models - Yes, looks good and serves a purpose

RS, GT, Club Sport models - No

Cayman - No, looks wrong

928 - Yes

Can't say I remember the last time I've had to rely on the rear window being clear, come to think of it I wonder how saloon car or van drivers cope wink

When looking for my Cayman S I discounted cars with a rear wiper as it looks hideous (more so on Cayman than 911).

I have driven through some heavy rain and have never missed not having a rear wiper. Each time I wash the car a quick coating of RainX means that any water simply flies off!

I believe you're thinking is a little too restrictive.... It's not the wiper that's the problem but the glass rear screen smile

I wouldn't be without it either. It clears the screen and stops it misting on the inside because it clears the water from the outside. INVALUABLE smile

Rear wipe on my 3.2 911 and 944 is useless, but then so are the front wipers :Dbreally th rear wipe clears such a small area it is pointless.

On a saloon the airflow clears the rear window so wiper not needed. On my Golf the rear wipe is essential as everything goes over the roof and onto the rear screen.

Yes, that annoying misting. They've put someone on the Moon so you'd think they would have found a cheap reliable solution to demist the rear screen. I suppose even if they did, what would you call it? Back window un-steamer? Would never catch on.

I'm with you, I chose to have a rear wiper on my 981 CS and need to use it when its raining to get on/off my drive way.

Everyone's right to say its not needed at speed, but in slow moving traffic and car parking its useful. I also think Cayman look odd with out one!

One thing to note; its only a wiper, Porsche don't add a washer jet at the back if you go for the rear wiper option.

The lack of washer actually drives me up the bloody wall. Agree though, it's when moving slowly/reversing that the wiper is invaluable.

Doesn't the car have a rear window/outside mirror defogger/deicer? My Boxster has this for the mirrors and with a hardtop a connector for the one in the hardtop's window. My Cayman came with one, and my Turbo has one too (and a rear wiper) that if the rear window gets a bit fogged up the defogger/deicer clears right up.

BTW, the rear window, and the front glass and side glass, all develop a film on the inside that seems to increase the formation of fog on the glass. What I have found helps immensely is to give the inside glass surfaces a good cleaning every once in a while.

Oh, and I really like the rear wiper on my Turbo. When I'm out in the rain, I use it to clear away the water off the glass before I back out of a parking space. Sure, once under way one can drive through some serious rain and as long as one's speed is high enough the rear window stays clear and nearly free of water but at other times the wiper comes in real handy.

I had a 996 with the rear wiper removed and blanking plug fitted. Dead simple to delete if required and certainly no reason to balk ball the entire car!
