I have an annoying clonk over bumps from the rear of my 986 Boxster S. Not on undulations but on and off speed bumps and bad road surfaces. It's not the suspension, it's been checked, and the position of the noise moves if the hood is down.

I've put the hood in the service position and the only thing I can find that is loose is in the picture below (yes it needs cleaning!):

The strut can be wiggled and there is lateral movement at the upper spring washer, so I'm thinking of removing the it and putting a spacer / washer below it. However, this 'slack' movement may be necessary.

Has anybody sourced this as the cause of a clonk or should I be looking elsewhere?

Had this on my Boxster, it was the shock top mount that had failed.

My money is on rear trailing arms.........

Is it a hollow knock that sounds directly behind the seats??

No its not from behind the seats. Suspension top mounts sounds like a possible although nothing obvious can be seen.

I'm now not sure the noise moves when the hood is down, I think the change in sound perspective makes it seem like it has moved.
