more of a FYI but also a question. Admiral won't cover a windscreen replacement direct from Porsche - only approved repairers which they use - Autoglass or National windscreens. Autoglass refused to repair saying the crack is too small and since the windscreen is laminated, there is a risk of cracking it during repair. So my options are (since i want it replaced), go with replacement via approved glass providers (will be an 3rd party windscreen) or pay up (£600+) to replace at Porsche. Car is a 07 cayman s. What would PH do ?

I've had screens fitted without checking where they were from and they've been fine. However, if you only want a Porsche-branded screen then I'd suggest either pushing your insurers a bit more to get them to cough up for the job you want (as others on here have successfully done) or get a recommended specialist to quote for the job - in fact, it's worth doing that first then see what your insurers will pay towards it (hopefully all of it).

As an example (not on a Porsche, but that doesn't matter), I've paid under £200 for a new fitted screen when Autoglass were going to charge over £400 to an insurance company.

Just had a OE screen replaced on my 987.2 (see other thread) insurance didn't want to know and would only pay for non OE glass, or want me to pay £282 plus the excess £70 towards OE glass, whereas Autoglass was £174 plus my excess for OE glass.

My screen would have been £500 from Porsche and they would charge £175 to fit although they outsource this anyway.

so what did you have to pay in the end? what was the damage to the windscreen on your car? mine has a little ding and is obviously scratched to fk as it's 7 years old.

Options I'd use are -

1. Get Glassman to fix it.
2. Get Glassman to replace it.

£70 excess as per my policy and an additional £174 on top for OE glass

Sorry forgot to add my screen was hit by something pretty big - golf ball sized caused a ring fracture and extensive cracks outward from this over about a square foot of glass

sure no worries. I have a small crack which they didn't want to repair because there was a risk of laminated windscreen cracking. Plus a multitude of chips from 7 years on the road. Time for a new one..

That only works if you live within his catchment area.

That would work if you're not a million miles away from him.

i've gotten a call from my local autoglass asking if I want OE glass - surprise surprise. I've said yes, and prepared my credit card but they say that most times Admiral approves the difference, we shall see...

I had national windscreens replace my windscreen through Admiral.

I didnt even give non genuine glass a thought, but when it was installed it was a genuine screen. Have you checked with national windscreens what brand they use, or just assuming it's not genuine?

Autoglass has a clear distinction of 3rd party and OE, but according to the chap on the phone it's pretty much the same thing. He did however agree that gps and radio antennas might be of concern with the 3rd party glass and was understanding why i'd want oe glass. How much is the difference we shall soon find out..

Original Equipment - here, the screens used by Porsche to build the car.

As I understand it, Autoglass use OE screens (or so their website says), so the insurer will pay up if you press hard enough.

Autoglass DON'T use OE glass, however they can get it, my OE screen came from Porsche in Nottingham via them. My insurer wouldn't pay the difference between the Autoglass screen and OE, certainly not as much discount as I could get direct from Autoglass anyway.

Precisely - the Autoglass chap on the phone needed my chassis no. to get a quote from Porsche. He did say however that sometimes insurer will approve it, sometimes they won't, but I'm okay paying a bit extra over the excess for OE glass.
