My current car is a R56 Mini Cooper S which I’ve had for a few years. I’m looking to upgrade to something a bit more special, nippy and at least equally fun to drive, so I’m stuck between the Cayman R and a Boxster Spyder.

Regular 987 Boxsters don’t really tickle my fancy but the Spyder in white looks sublime and so, so special.
I plan to keep the Mini for winters and will eventually replace it with something larger like an A4 Avant or similar. I only have one underground parking space at my place and the garage where I park my classic cars is a few miles away, so changing cars on a daily "how’s the weather"-basis is out of question.

Does the Boxster Spyder work as a daily driver in summer? In the past my average distance was ~3500 miles per summer, not a lot.
The Boxster Spyder essentially a Boxster S with a different roof, so I don’t see why it would require a lot more pampering than a Cayman R does. Unless the roof is prone to leak in rain?

The roof doesn't leak in the rain.

Ride is a bit firm for a daily driver and wind noise at motorway speeds with the roof up is a bit of a bind but no reason why you couldn't use one every day. Khushy on here has done over 70k miles in his I think.

They are a lovely sports car.

why for 30/40pc less money he could have an equally good 987.2 boxster and not loose £10-15k over next 2 years but he wants something a little special which the spyder is.the spyder is a great car and no reason not to use as a daily through out the summer, buy well and it could be depreciation free motoring.the caymanR is equally as good question is do you want a coupe or a cab.?

Yes the Spyder does it works as a daily drive. It will do exactly what you say you are seeking.

OP doesn't like 'normal' 987 Boxsters, only the Spyder. A new 981 (long as you don't cave in on the delicious options configurator) costs about the same.

Agree about depreciation, nothing like a new car though eh....

I found the Cayman cramped and as the Boxster doesn't suffer any real structural deficiencies over the tin top I fail to see any drawbacks.

Delightful open air motoring (especially with the sports exhaust) and a cosy roof when you need it.

The new cars dull and the steering will feel dull after your mini.

A used 981 S is in the price range and probably the "better" daily driver and sportscar, but without having driven both, I like the puristic approach of the Spyder a lot. I love the looks of the white Spyder, the rear and side view so unique and special without being too flashy. cloud9

I’m sure the 981S has its advantages over a Spyder, but I feel like the various comforts might distract from the raw driving experience that I’m looking for. In my opinio newer and faster isn’t necessarily more fun to drive.

And as you mentioned the difference in depreciation should be substantial (until they announce a 981 Spyder... hopefully never... wink)
