I knew my rear tyres where due for replacement soon but i've done very few miles in the car over the winter. I've just checked and the outside third of the tyre is completely bald. Is this normal for the 981 (mine has the optional PTV) or do I need to get the geo done when I get the tyres replaced?

How often do you check your tyre pressures?

How do you drive, are the few miles hard miles? How long have the tyres been on the car, how many miles have the tyres covered overall?

Once a month i'd suppose. They don't tend to loose pressure though.

Yes pretty hard , in the corners anyway. It does like to go sideways more than I remember the 987 CS and 986 Boxster S doing.

They've done around 10k. So they've lasted well. I'm not worried that they need replacing, just that the wear is so uneven.

On a side note has anyone fitted anything else other the the Perelli P Zero to the 981? I've read a lot on here about the Super Sports ( I understand the warranty issues).

Super Sports are about as good as you can get for a road tyre.

I would get the geo checked as although 10k miles is about right as a lifespan when driven to enjoy, they should still wear evenly.

Presumably this is at least partly a result of the electronic whats-its braking individual wheels to assist in cornering.

Probably get less wear if you switch that stuff off/ learn to go round a corner properly without help :-)

(The above is tongue in cheek, so dont be offended!)

No offence taken.

That's exactly what I wondering though, which is why I was look for the experience of other owners with PTV.

10,000 miles worth of hard driving sounds pretty good, get your point on PTV vs Non though.

FYI - In my 987 boxster I used to get around 12.5k out of the fronts and 9k out of the rears with Pilot Sport 2's.

I have just replaced 20" Pirellis at 7.5k miles and fitted Bridgestone N0 rated tyres. The Pirellis still have 5 - 6 mm tread but rear grip was poor, particularly in damp conditions. Bridgestones are much better for me anyway on track in the damp and hung on well at Goodwood last Monday.

Thanks. I'll book it in with the stealer then. That is unless anyone can recommend a local alternative? I'm in the Altrincham area.

.... or a serious tyre specialist with a Hunter alignment machine, if that's more convenient.

Mike at Sports and Classic, Knutsford. Nice little run out via Ashley and Mobberley.

OK, I'll say it. The consensus is that 10k miles is acceptable for a set of rear tyres. I don't, I think that's quite poor, in any car, especially if the PTV is supposed to help cornering.

My 986S needed tyres soon after I bought it and the dates stamps on the tyres with the service history indicated about 15k for the rears and over 20k for the fronts (Pirelli P-zero), and the previous owner didn't drive like a vicar methinks.

As a comparison, one of my other cars (TVR Chimaera, more torque but a bit less bhp)) has done 6k on a set of Toyo T1-Rs. They still have 6mm plus of tread all round, with no traction control or ABS, & spins the rears for a pastime in any slight dampness.

For the price that some of these tyres are, I'd expect more wear out of them. All tyres now come with a wear rating, the Pirelli Zero gets a 'C.' The Bridgestones get E, F and even a G for one brand (SO2) so they're expected to last even less!
