Hi Guys

I posted a couple of weeks ago about a 986 steaming up after i'd driven and condensation in the car...

I decided that I needed to put some Silica Gel in a pair of the Mrs's tights. I decided that the back shelf would be a good place to put this... when i was there, I noticed a bit of a draught and some of the 'carpet' above the engine had curled up and didnt appear to be sitting right.

I noticed that I was able, quite easily to push my hand down past that and into the void where the hood would sit on a summer's day. I was able to feel the drain trays where water would run into .. thats as good as being the outside world.

Is that normal? Am I missing something? And could it be the cause of my condensation?

Photos attached.... (The brown coloured thing is the tights with Silica Gel in them... )

Perfectly normal.

Put the roof halfway and check the drip tray drain holes are clear; give the roof a jiggle and check it is secure on the plastic balljoints on both sides and put the seats forward and feel under the rear carpet on both sides to make sure it's dry while you are there.

Hi Guys

thanks for the replies... checked all five drain holes a couple of weeks back and cleared some at the front.... all dry thankfully, especially under the seats! wink

It just seemed a bit odd that i would be able to feel the 'outside'.

Tell me if i'm talking out my arse here, but is it possible that somewhere on that drip tray water is getting down near the engine, getting heated up somewhere and then getting back into the cabin, condensing when the engine cools?

Think its about time I cleaned out my garage, put the thing in there for a couple of weeks to dry out.. frown

You cannot really avoid condensation on an open car; best suggestion is to drive with AC on at all times - regardless of temp (ambient or selected) as the system removes moisture from the air during use. Note that the carpets can appear dry on top but the insulation (up to 2" thick on the floor) is a very effective sponge that holds water very well, masking any slow ingress.

Bit of an update on this one....

Bought a load of Silica Gel, put in a pair of the mrs' tights and left it in the car.. immediate improvement. no problems since... thankfully
