Boxster Spyder Windscreen Replacement
Discussion
Has anyone on here experienced having a screen replaced on there Spyder? Noticed a 5 inch crack in mine, rang my insurers and Auto Glass are due to replace the screen this coming Saturday. On arranging I had to pay a £75 excess.
I did a quick google search and have read a few old posts with stories of damage to paintwork and poor workmanship and I am now wondering if I have rushed into things and should have telephoned my OPC or are AG up to the job, any advice welcome?

Why is window replacement on a Spyder going to be different than any other Boxster or Cayman?
Don't suppose it is, just looking for reassurance that Auto Glass are up to job. They have done Audi screens for me before without problem but being a relatively newbie to Porsche ownership and learning quickly how anal people are over there cars wondered if having it replaced by the right people! As posted elsewhere, last year I had to have two windscreens changed at about the same time. 1 in my 997, the other in my Passat.
Because of the comments on here, though I let autoglass do the Passat, I arranged for my indie, Paragon, to get the 997 done, by another contractor, whilst the car was with them for service and MOT. They used an OE screen, kept the car overnight for the seal to cure and everything was fine.
Autoglass came to my home to do the Passat. Not sure of the make of the screen but it has been fine. The fitter was a nice guy, explained to me what he was doing at each stage, and left the car clean, unmarked. No problems 15 months on.
Next time? Well, if I could get the same guy I would have no hesitation in using Autoglass for any of my cars.
Just my experience.

If OPC are not doing the replacement then I suppose it's all about the fitter apposed to the company. I will telephone AG to check they use OP screen and keep a close eye on the job. Funnily enough mine has just developed a crack from a stone chip. Rang my OPC and they wouldn't help. Told me they don't have the equipment and to just run it through insurers. Pretty disappointed by that TBH.
Ask Mike at Sports & Classic, the guy he uses is very experienced with Porsches, I think he does work for Wilmslow OPC too (which might be how Mike got to know him), he'll deal with the insurers etcMake sure it is a genuine Porsche one they use ..i had a screen fitted on the 987 a few years ago and i think it was AG who did the job and they said it is a Porsche approved one but not and original they would use .
I insisted it had to be and they actually ordered one from the local OPC .
I contacted the center and as i know the part manager well and he confirmed it was on order .It has a mark on it saying something like Saint Moben on the left hand corner of the screen

By "insured with Porsche" do you mean with Aviva via Marsh, who run the Porsche Insurance services operation?
If so, then I doubt that you will have any issues whichever way you go. I am with them for all my cars and they told me to do what I wanted as far as havering the replacements. With the 997, I paid the whole bill to Paragon, about £700, and sent a copy of the invoice to Marsh.
I was refunded, less the excess, within a week, direct from Aviva.

Just FYI, when ringing your insurer, by following the automated switchboard instructions, you will usually end up with their preferred supplier who will answer the call with, 'Hello Glassline...' or something similar. Even if you do speak to your insurer directly, they will try and steer you towards their nominated supplier.
You can nominate your own supplier with most insurers and even the awkward ones like Admiral, there are circumstances by which you can insist on your own preference. There is also a legal angle on it in many cases.
Just saying.

Hi
I had mine replaced about three weeks ago. It was the insurers 'go to' peeps - National Windscreens. The guy I spoke to , at NW was keen to do it on a Saturday so that his guys could take their time over it and he almost insisted I fit a Genuine Part.
He pointed out that the glass came from the same place and that if it wasn't a genuine part it more than likely had just had the Porsche badge polished off but he felt that it was best to keep it all genuine on a limited run car. Perhaps(?) they made more money out of it from the insurance company but I was in agreement with him.
Can't fault the service or the fitting watched the whole process - very professional / careful.

The manufacturers use statements like, the glass, "responds to main technical and aesthetic characteristics".
Knock off Prada handbags also 'respond' to technical and aesthetic characteristics!

As I thought when I started this post more to it than originally thought. I will call my local OPC Colchester tomorrow and my insurers Competition Car Insurance and see what they say. AG have already taken the £75 excess by credit card so not sure if I will get that back if don't use them, better than invalidating my warranty though!
I will post my findings tomorrow.
