Cayman S needs a new flywheel/clutch - where to go?
Discussion
I have had my 06-reg, 35,000 mile Cayman S for around a month now, and recently noticed a strange rumble when engaging and disengaging the clutch at around 2,000rpm.
I have had a Porsche Technician, a Senior Porsche Technician and a friend of mine who is a mechanic and gearbox/clutch specialist, all have diagnosed it as the dual mass flywheel, so sounds like the transmission is coming out one way or another. If that’s coming out, I may as well replace the clutch at the same time.
Now, to do all this the Porsche main dealer want around £2,000 – ouch! Anyone know who manufactures the genuine clutch and flywheel for Porsche?
JZM Porsche (local specialist, seem well regarded) want around £1,300-£1,400 to do the same work, using OEM-spec but not Porsche parts. This goes up to around £1,800 using genuine OEM parts.
My mate, who does run his own garage and is a gearbox/clutch specialist BUT has not done a Cayman before, could do it for £1,000, using OEM-spec Sachs or LUK parts – is either better than the other?
So, where do I go? Is it a straightforward job that I can trust my mate and his garage with for their first go? Do I go specialist with non-genuine Porsche parts? If I want Porsche parts I may as well go main dealer!
Cheers,
Mike

A clutch on a Boxster/Cayman is around £600 + VAT at a decent specialist (just over half of which is labour), add on another hour to change the flywheel, and the rear main seal (RMS) and intermediate shaft seal housing, which is about another £50-70 of parts, plus the flywheel cost. You can get an idea of parts cost by putting your registration into www.eurocarparts.com
JZM will be at the upper end of non-OPC prices. I don't think the job's beyond any decent, diligent, mechanic, but do point out that the seals want replacing as part of the job. A Porsche specialist will have done loads though, and will do it in less time.

OK, thanks. I wasn't aware all the seals need replacing too, and the price you have quoted is a lot less than I've had from anywhere! JZM don't seem to offer much of a saving over OPC really, so if I can get the OPC price down then I may end up going there - at least I get a warranty and courtesy car I guess!

What exactly is "same as OEM spec"? Nothing but sales puffery I suspect.
I'd be wanting genuine Porsche parts - labour bill is big, and the same, either way.
So you'd rather have a Sachs clutch but with a Porsche box and higher price tag - go for it, it's your money!I'd be wanting genuine Porsche parts - labour bill is big, and the same, either way.
