I am looking at Boxster 2.7 Facelift. Does anyone have any buyer advice? What sort of MPG will I get out of it (75miles daily commute)?

Any other information appreciated. Budget around £10,000

Thanks.

What year of Boxster do you mean? 986 or 987?

£10k would be very strong money for a 986 in my opinion.

Not going to say anything else other than the following:
1) IMHO the 987 2.7 litre boxer is the biggest bargain right now in second hand pork. That is a lot of not very old car for not much money and that engine seems to have a rep for being pretty bullet proof comparatively speaking. I can say I have one eye on 987 2.7 boxsters myself.
2) When you link autotrader ads like that it looks to me like it is including your post code, may want to think about it if you want to do that or not.

I had a budget of £10k when looking for a facelift 986 2.7 over the summer. Ended up finding a lovely one, 42k miles, seal grey, good spec, still under Porsche warranty! new discs/pads and rear rubber...etc. I've done about 1800 miles in it so far, the last 700 of which were around northern France where it averaged 33mpg on SUL. I've even seen the OBC as high as 40.5mpg on a long run!!

I'm loving it so far, it's comfortable (on 17's + standard suspension), it makes a lovely noise, it's quick enough to be fun and there's enough storage space for it not to be an issue running it as an only car. There's a whole wealth of info, knowledge and guides online and the servicing costs aren't too bad - £265 for a minor at an OPC - cheaper than many indies!

I have a few plans for next year, once the Porsche warranty runs out - possibly an LN Engineering upgraded IMS bearing, and a fruitier exhaust, but otherwise it's fine as it is.

Did you buy this from Bournemouth area by any chance?

I would agree with this. The car does feel special. My only disappointment is fuel consumption of 26mpg. It has been checked by Hartech and they think it OK. That would deter me from your commute.

I used to get on average 29mpg out of my facelift 2002 3.2S, since acquiring my 987 3.2S the average has been 32mpg with a best of 34mpg. I don't drive it particularly hard but equally it is 'used' from time to time...

We're just about to advertise ours after 5 great years of ownership and 35k miles (commuting, motorway and lots of pleasure).
The car hasn't let us down once, and is great fun to drive. Servicing costs are fine, the biggest running cost is tyres - and imo the only tyres to use are conti's. when we first got the car, it was on p zero rossos, which are lethal in the wet (no confidence whatsoever, easy to break traction) - the 2.7 is a non TC car. With sportcontact's, the cold / greasy grip and feedback is much, much better.

One thing you will read is that the stereo is rubbish - which it s if you don't set it properly. If you get the upgraded one (i think thy called it digital), then the headunit is beker, and there are 4 speakers. The bass speakers are in the doors, rest in the dash. If you want more bass, and use tye bass / treble controls to do it, it sounds horrible. However, if you simply use the fader towards the rear, you get the extra bass without the distortion.

Finally, if you have the dash layout with the thin cupholder, once it's out, pull it towards the passenger. Et voila - a second cup holder that is actually big enough for a cup. It took us 4 years to spot that, and both of us were a little too happy when we found it, cnsidering it's just a cupholder...

I hope you find a good car, and that it makes you as happy as ours has. smile

I was hoping for 40mpg on a run and 30 at the worst out of a 2.7

What are they like in the snow (winter is coming) with winter tyres? Currently got a BMW 320d Touring and its superb in snow with Winters (not brave to run it without!)

I've had my Cayman 2.7 from new for 5 years. Average economy is about 26mpg. It is my daily driver and I mainly use it for short drives at sedate speeds, with occasional blast to "exercise" the engine. Best I've ever seen for a long run is about 33mpg, averaging 60 or so on the motorway, giving a range of 460 miles.

I've no idea how you would get 30 mpg average.

I spoke to the owner when it was first advertised in Oct / Nov last year, sounded a really honest example - if I remember the story goes that the first owner specced it well & then just after he took delivery his Mrs walked out on him & by all accounts he just posted the keys back through the OPC door!! Second owner, who I guess you bought from, bought it from OPC early on so really just a one owner car.

Had a great service record with OPC Bournemouth if I remember correctly. I was very tempted to view but held off for a 3.2 which I bought early Jan & then was written off end April by a muppet in a van. I saw it advertised again after mine was written off & nearly did travel to view (quite a distance for me) as the OPC warranty was a major plus. However shortly after acquired a 987 S (with an OPC warranty :-)).

Good luck with it, sounded an honest car, hope you enjoy it.

We had one, it was superb with winter tyres (cheapo Khumho), even in deep 6 inch snow.

If the exhaust looks low then make sure you check the gearbox/engine mounts, these fail and end up causing damage to the cast aluminium carrier.

Ha, yup, that's the one! If they'd sold it in Oct/Nov it'd have saved them the £3k bill in March for new tyres, major service, new discs and pads all round, plus another year's warranty...

It's a lovely car, and the warranty has already paid dividends, there's a slight knocking from the front which I thought was drop links but OPC Portsmouth have diagnosed a slight issue with the steering rack so that's being replaced.

You can get 30mpg average but your commute has to consist of no town traffic. I get around 26 / 27 mpg but on a really good run of A and B roads, I saw an average of 34 mpg.

I average 26mpg out of my 2.7 Cayman. If you drive it anywhere like you should, it's what you get. For long runs on the motorway it will get 30+mpg. But that's really the only time it does. Or driving like a saint, which isn't really the point.

It's a 2.7ltr, 245hp, flat 6, N/A *petrol* engine. FWIW the 3.4 320hp DFI engines that came later (2009+) are just as economical, which is just damned impressive. No idea what the 2.9 does. But given that you have to thrapp it to make it go like the 2.7, probably not a lot different. It's not going to get the same sort of economy as a 2.0TD rep-mobile.

I think you would have to drive on the motorway at a cruise controlled 56mph slip streaming a large truck to achieve that!

Seriously, a 2.0 petrol mondeo would only just do that!

Holy thread resurrection, Batman!! 11 years?

Yep! It's true =)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/315684237751?chn=ps&amp...

..And ironically, finally sold ours yesterday. What a fantastic car, 16 years and 75k miles we had that thing and it caused fewer issues and lower bills than various other more mundane things we had along the way. I hope whoever has it next has a similar experience!
