I understand all the comparisons between GT3 and GT4, BUT there’s one big issue - namely the price gap. A new GT4 nice spec With buckets etc can be bought for £85K, that’s for a brand new car that no one else has thrashed, possibly crashed, bashed or over rev’d. A second hand manual box 991:2GT3 is the thick end of 50% extra. For me at least that’s a lot of money. Plus that’s for a car that’s three years old etc.
Yep, the 718 GT4 is an amazing car for the money.

There is nothing out there that gives the same bang-for-buck on a brand new car.

But you are not really comparing like with like as new v used comparisons are always flawed imo.

At £111k new GT3 v £75k new GT4 the GT3 is unquestionably the far better bargain being a 911 with that incredible engine. Even more so as next years 992 will probably be considerably more expensive with the only slightly more powerful but same Speedster engine but diluted sound and more weight gpfs.

I said my GT4 was my posers car, and I tracked that, so not sure why it upsets people.
I also said there is nothing wrong with it, people buy what they like.
So YOU bought a GT4 to pose in and assume everyone else has done the same? I didn't and I know plenty of others that didn't either so yet again you're wrong. Just like you were/are about steering column stitching.

Porsche911R said:
you always state you buy on looks not how a car drives other wise you would be in a Cayman R now :-), you don't like how 987.2 look ! your words, The differance here is YOU ADMIT you buy on looks.
I didn't buy any 987.2 Cayman as I don't like the look of them, very true, but I wouldn't buy a Cayman R for several other reasons either. Looks is not the only reason. I bought a new 981 GTS as it was the current new car at the time and I really liked everything about them. I bought my 718 GT4 for many reasons, including looks, but not solely on looks. Selective memory from you yet again just becuase you like having a dig at me. Give it a rest, it's tiresome.

Possibly, but having a choice between purchasing a new GT3 vs a GT4 isn't an option many will have I'd think.

Certainly in my case I've been offered an allocation on a new GT4 at list, an approved used GT3 in the spec I'd want would be £120k+, roughly 1.4x the price of the car, also, not within my budget. It's easy to say, oh just buy the GT3 instead, but I think given my constraints I'll be more than happy with my GT4 smile.

Still don’t personally think the gearing is an issue.

Tomorrow is my 5th track day in the 718 gt4..
Where are you going? I was going to go to Anglesey this weekend but have been forced to spend time with my better half. Friend of mine will be there in his turbo'd GT86.

Yep no question as others have also said the new GT4 is a great package at the money and essentially will be free motoring too which is the icing on the cake.

I went for the GT4 because I like the mid layout. Never been interested in any 911 due to the engine layout.

Not really, if torque is what you want then the 2.5t has that in spades!

If torque was all I wanted I wouldn’t be getting a GT car I’d be getting another 911 Turbo. As for buying a 4 cyl Porsche, that’s Hilarious.

Anyway, has anyone any useful comments regarding all weather Tyres on a GT4 please, Pirelli in particular?

55mph in the slow lane you are blind for 3 seconds every time a lorry passes you, it's quite scary !! the water covers the whole car...

in the ice cold they understeer like a pig, ie you think, here is a nice round about" and then go straight on for a few yards after turning the wheel with a missed heat beat !!

It's all doable if you don't come across another road issue, you can drive to the conditions if you are the only car on the road.
And you may well make it though winter if you don't come across an accident where you need to stop !

BUT if you need to stop in the cold and wet even with the 4 second rule you will still hit the car in front.

My partner daily ours, did all last winter, she didn't have any issues and she relies more on bending the rules of physics than pure driving skill, also took it to Skye in October in rain and sub zero temps and didn't have a problem. don't expect it to have summer levels of grip, slow down and vision up.

Interesting, with all the tales of death and destruction I expected the Cups to be somewhat like one of these Arctic ice driving experiences (sans the studded tyres) on a daily basis.

people always take a risk, you can fall over 3000 times and be ok but you can fall over once and break your neck.
Imo any one driving Cups in winter is being pretty irresponsible, my view is pretty straight forward on it.
You will always get ****ts who don't follow guide lines or rules that's life. I hope they don't kill anyone or are not behind me.

I did say on here you will get people saying they drive their cars all year round, doesn't make it right.
I would NOT let my other half take my car out in OCT in the wet and freezing temps, but then I want her to return home alive and well.

Usually October and November are ok temp wise on Cups. Sometimes up to Christmas if its wet and mild.

Once the gritters appear though ,thats generally it until Spring.

to quote the poster

"also took it to Skye in October in rain and sub zero temps"

depends where you live, I don't buy winter tyres as I work from home inthe midlands, and the ave temps I leave home is >7oc even in winter,
I did buy winters one year they were crap for 90% of my use and I was worse off than a set of PS4S !!!

if you live up north it's a given you have to buy winter tyres also.

Running a CUP's in sub freezing temps in the rain is, well I have said all I need to say on that.

The GT4 will be fine in the wet with a set of MPS4Ss on - you could get a second set of rims (which could be sold on later; if you buy s/h, you may not lose much, if anything) or you could just replace and sell the Cup 2s as new (assuming that they are removed from the rims without sidewall damage). Minimal loss ...

You also don't need to have N-rated MPS4Ss ... However, you can get 285/20s for the rear that are N-rated. These are fitted to GT-Rs and if a 650+ torque GT-R is fine with them on I am sure that a GT4 will be (can attest for the GT-R but not tried them on the GT4 yet tbh). Also, I think that the official Porsche-supplied winter tyre size is 285/20?

Speed bumps, probably fine in the main tbh. You may get one or two bad ones but if you one-wheel them it should be fine. As stated, drives and other steep inclines may be more awkward but these are less common (someone near you with a GT4 may be able to test your drive?).

As stated, get the car that suits you best. However, if you really want a GT car, see if you can try one (Silverstone, for example) to see how you get on. Don't post exactly where you live, obviously, but if you post the approximate region then a GT4 owner on here may be willing to pop over and see if your drive will be an issue for you.

If 2020 has told us anything, there's a huge amount of sh!t out there. If you have a dream, and if it's realistic, go for it as you never know what is round the corner! [Obvious caveats apply ...]

Good luck and enjoy whichever decision you make. Both will be great cars and I'm sure you'll love driving either smile
Thank you Evo, I appreciate your advice and comments. Going to take the GT4 as it’s the car I have always wanted and it wasn’t easy getting the allocation. GTS would be more practical but like you say in these times sometimes we have to make a dream come true. Car is November build for December delivery. Anyone used the OPC to have MPS4s put on for pick up as imagine cups will be interesting in December? Would be great to see some pics of GT4s, decided to save some cash and go for Gentian over Python. Have a good weekend all.

Ah thanks for that, was one of the things I was wondering about. I am definitely in the “useful to have a car that is quiet enough to get on track camp”.

Whilst I don't disagree Cup2 tyres are not the best in the cold/wet, this review (albeit Cup2 R) gives an interesting perspective.

I've now a different view on Pirelli after watching it. Previously I wouldn't go near them!
