The other thread with the 991.2 that’s having new turbos, how common is it? Is there a definitive fix? Does the issue remain on the 992?

My understanding is that at present there is not a fix for the turbo issue. If a turbo fails, its replacement is the same part. I may be wrong but that’s what I was told quite recently.

Speaking to a specialist a month ago, they reckon 20 to 25% of the 991.2 cars they’ve sold have had turbo failures within the following 12 months.

I recently sold my GTS partly due to this and I’ve just taken ownership of a 991.1

Hi I’ve had my 991.2 for two and a half years and no problems it’s had the oil supply pipes changed with the previous owner. I drive it like you did back the day when I had a metro turbo and esprit turbo, engine up to operating temp before using any boost after a long run or if I have been driving more spirited let the car idle for a few minutes before switching off.
Great car

Mine went twice. It’s definitely a thing. Don’t understand why the Turbo model doesn’t suffer from it though!?
Warranty is a must have IMO on these turbo based cars .

I don't think there's anything that you can do to fully protect yourself. If you're driving through the winter then you need to be aware that the turbos are very low to the ground with no protection. The same goes for most of the engine ancillaries and pipework. Mine still looks pretty good after more than 8 years, but it's rarely been out in these sort of conditions and has been cleaned and protected underneath with lanoguard. I guess I'm now 6K in pocket from not having a warranty, so if the worst happens I'll pay up and move on. What I would do though is go for aftermarket turbos.

You can find a good car for less than 40% of the cost of a new 992 and still have a great car, so I wouldn't really regard this as a reason to discount them. I've done more than 40K of reliable miles in mine and all is well. I do treat it with love though and so it's had choice upgrades and additional oil services in between the 2 year intervals. The independent garage does more items than the OPC would as well.

Mine had a turbo fail at 8000 miles with the previous owner. I’ve now put on 9000 miles without a turbo issue, just have a bit of mechanical sympathy, that’s all. Oh, & IMHO I get an oil change annually.
Besides, turbos aren’t rocket science & it’s a real money spinner for OPCs……

My understanding is that if it's a warranty claim, then the time allocated to do the works, is set by Porsche HQ and is so tight that the OPCs don't make money.

RPM are working on something for them but they also, currently, won't sell a GTS without it having an OPC warranty on it which I can perfectly understand.

Like above, mine does not go out over winter which I'd assume will extend the life a little and so far, at 22k, I've had not turbo issues at all but I do let it all warm up fully and cool down after a hard run as well.

Referencing the underbody treatment, does that go on the turbos as well? I can't recall if anyone has ever stated the specific failure other than say the oil lines lead to turbo unit replacements. If underbody protection is the way forward that's a very simple and good value fix. Still amazing all of Porsche's years of development never once showed the problem...
