I suspect this has been covered to death. But here's my dilemma. I started the search for a 997 GTS and was keen on a 4 because I like the looks of the extra rear lights bar. But, I've been put off by some of the video reviews concluding the 997 GTS PDK is not very engaging to drive. I gave up looking for a 997 GTS Manual, so I started looking at 991 which is a lot bigger on the outside and I hope a little bigger on the inside at the back also as I'd like to fit my 6 and 11 year old kids for more longer journeys ideally, I have a vision of a 911 with the aero storage roof. and spending holidays through Europe. I've not seen one in real life so mainly because I don't have time to go look.

Now, 991. I dislike the fact that it is bigger than the 997, but the interior looks a lot better especially in the 991.2. 991.2 has those turbo problems. If I go this way, I will buy a 991.2 with OPC warranty which I hope will sort any technical problems.

So I'm wondering how engaging would the 991.2 be ? 99% it will be PDK. But I'm also wondering if I should look at Turbo / S also. I do like the alcantara interior in the GTS better.

It would be a 5th car for me if we count the 1960s race cars and other classic cars. More for occasions and driving trips. I hope to keep it for a long time and put some miles on the 911, whatever shape that will be.

Budget £85k

turbo s a no brainer for me. More comfortable and less niggles than 991 with cooking 3.0 engine.

Both cars can be very engaging if you find the environment to push them.

Turbo is the do it all super car and depreciation is slow.

My kids are a similar age to yours. Buy now as it’s a slim window before they won’t fit. My 10 year old is in that strange position where the law tells me that he needs a booster, but even the slimmest pushes his head onto the glass, so pragmatically I just sit him down on the seat, as this is safer. In reality they are child size seats anyway.

I've got a 991.2 GTS PDK. Happy to answer any questions.

I chose it as I wanted the GTS style interior and 450bhp was enough. :-)

I've had the smoke issues, but dealt with satisfactorily via warranty.

It's the best car I've ever owned. Mega power with absolute precision and a decent ride.

I looked at every 911 a couple of years ago and ended up with the GTS as it does everything to a 9/10 without any compromise. Didn't care about the Turbo as I wanted rear wheel drive and don't like the look of them. A GT3 wasn't right as it is too much of a faff finding the right spec (for someone else as there seems to be such paranoia around that subject) and didn't have rear seats.

The GTS does everything superbly, the interior with the full GTS option is incredible and the right spec is easy to find as most options were ticked for the car to be used as normal transport. Mine has nose lift but you really don't need it and I wouldn't get a sunroof as they're more trouble than they're worth in my experience.

It also goes like stink and gets 42mpg on a long motorway slog or 28 around town. it also seems to be a bit invisible at least as a 911 can.

You'll have a creaky driver seat thanks to the tilting mechanism to allow rear access, something in the rear near side rattles by the back seats and the leather sunvisors also creek (think 80s Golf ear-rings) when it gets hot but it's really really good. Mine is also PDK like Ted's and engagement is just fine.

This was me this morning. The creaks can be annoying on poor surfaces. VW could teach Porsche a thing or two about interior niggles.

Ouch, do share if you find the little effer. Don't suppose your driver seat squeaks around the rear access pull does it? If I'm driving and I pull it up the noise goes away so it's definitely in there somewhere. Can't just be a GTS thing either.

I did almost cure it a year or so back but I think my padding might have moved.

Behind the C pillar trim there's a metal bracket that the trim hooks over. It needs some padding otherwise it shakes against that bracket.

Correction, it's not the pillar trim, it's the side piece. You don't have to take that out, but you can unhook it, pad it and put it back in position.

I've put some sticky padding in to wedge it properly.

I've also put gorilla tape on the bodywork where the fasteners go in so that the plastic doesn't rattle against the metal (shouldn't do it if the fastener is in properly but I'm going all in this time).

991.2 GTS! A truly amazing car with more power than most people can handle, easy to cruise in too and looks fabulous.

Probably the most impressive car I’ve ever had.

You don’t need to spend 85K to get a decent 991.2 GTS. I think the turbo depreciates worse than the GTS. Make sure you get one with rear wheel steering which for me would be a ‘must have’. My only major criticism having done 7 years in mine is that the suspension is a bit one dimensional in the standard SportPASM 20mm lowered spec. Its great on smooth tarmac but over rough ground it can have the effect of being in a supermarket trolley, as if one wheel is trundling over the ground. There is not much damping. Other than that an awesome car. I remember a few regular PH posters getting rid of their cars within the first few years as they couldn’t stand the rattling issues described above. Personally I just see it as an extension of the firm suspension, along with the tyre roar etc as part of the slightly more raw sports car experience.
Would you buy private if the car was under warranty or only from an OPC?

Before you go to deep, find a car and take the kids, if they don’t fit you might not pass Go…

I went with the Turbo S, the ride was much better for the type of roads I drive daily. Plus I love the performance, way it goes around the corners and winter traction.
Higher running costs though (fuel/OPC warranty)

991.1 GTS for the 3.8 n/a or Turbo / Turbo S if funds allow.

I went 3.8 n/a as I love the howl and it is fast enough for me.

No bad options!

Why not both? biggrinhttps://rpmtechnik.co.uk/porsche-sales/vehicle/991...

That is a perfect spec. Haggle it down a little and then swap me those wheels for my black ones!

£85k probably won’t get you into a 991.2 Turbo S unless it’s got high miles and isn’t in the best condition. I was on looking for one at the end of last year with a £110k budget, but couldn’t find the mileage and spec I wanted for that price. Ended up going for a well-specced 991.2 GTS instead and saved about £20–25k in the process. Sure, it doesn’t have the straight-line speed of a Turbo S, but it’s a bit more raw and actually feels closer to my old GT3 in character (which i was after).

My GTS at Bicester last weekend:
