Silly question but: GT3 992.2 Touring or GT3 992.1 RS

I feel silly to ask as it is down to personal preferences and very different cars but… I have an allocation for a 992.2 GT3 Touring.

But reasonably, it would mean letting my 992.1 GT3 RS go.

I do not track. I like the idea of a Touring. But I would miss the drama and all the aero tech of the 3RS. I enjoyed each mile with to date. And it is a multi thousand mileage, not a garage queen.

So I appreciate it is a silly question somehow but what are your thoughts?

I am not trying to generate a profit as the bubble burst. But I am thinking I’d keep one of the two forever (or say for as long as money and my body allow!).

Did you spec the RS from new?

You may never find a GT3/T as special as an RS.

Equally, an RS primary use is not the road.


Personally, I’d take a look at your RS and think about what you would change to improve it for you - then work out if it’s a new car or mods?

Being offered the new car has started your thoughts, but doesn’t mean you should take that deal.

I have a 992.13RS and no, I would not go back to a GT3, touring or winged

Imo, the 3RS is in a totally different league in terms of driving event.

Thank you for the below. Agree the 3RS is a track car but I had an amazing drive as well in the Swiss Alps with it.

I was fortunate to have an allocation and could spec it as I wanted with the extras you would expect beginning by WP.

I think I am perhaps attracted by the novelty factor of a Touring especially with 4 seats and making it a more understated traditional 911 with the GT3 DNA. There is nothing really I would change on the 3RS. I think it is perfect and I am nervous I might regret the sense of occasion and all the various settings you can apply to this car when you get to drive it and know it. But equally I am seduced by the simplicity and “touring/ B road” construction of the Touring…

The only snag I see with the RS is the lack of access to the rear of the car, seems a lot of wasted space, plus there is no other storage other than the glove box or door bins, but do you need them?

Yes, the touring will give you these things, and it will be an amazing car, but it isn't an RS.

I had the pleasure of being a passenger in a friends RS a couple of weeks ago, he didn't go silly and at first I was disappointed with how it rode, but he does track his, he quickly wound back all of the damping and it was like any other Porsche I've driven so it can easily be used on the road.

For me personally, I want a car that is an event, crap day at work etc you're walking across the car park and you see your car sitting there, instantly you have a smile on your face and you know that you can take the scenic route home and relax. For you the RS does that in spades I am sure, but would the touring do that for you?

I have a 992 and I've been offered a 992 Touring slot.

I turned down a 991 Touring about 3 years ago because to me it looks like a Carrera S.

I just cannot let my 992 RS go, because it's so special and miles better than my old 991.2 RS, so going to turn it down.

Indeed, as I stated above, would never swap mine for a GT3.
Incredible ride it is and, you can use them on UK roads.

I agree that I find my 3RS so compliant on roads too! Amazing in track albeit I didn’t do very much. And now prices have gone back to normal… 3RS seems quite well priced!

But that Touting is still itching me even more so in manual back to my days of 996 ownership!

I couldn’t drive the 992 RS about without wearing a balaclava. Unless I was tracking and trailering regularly then I wouldn’t touch one for the road personally.

Having been fortunate to spend a few days courtesy of Porsche driving the 992.1 GT3RS around Barcelona circuit, if I was doing a lot of track days as I did years ago, I'd be all over one.

However, for me, and as Robbo has very eruditely put it biglaugh for road driving, I'd have the manual Touring every time.

I have 991.2 Touring, and for me the fact it's under the radar means you can go about enjoying the car and drawing very little attention, whereas that would be more challenging in the RS. And of course the manual transmission option.

You are touching on the other right point which is: manual or PDK. I would like a manual but.. after years of 3RS ownership and despite being old enough to believe a “real” Touring has to be manual (still remembering my 996 C4S manual!), I also wonder to what extent I now enjoy focusing on the right lines and manage the engine with the throttle even in B roads.

You are touching on the other right point which is: manual or PDK. Foe a majority of time driving on roads I'd go manual every time with a GT car - not withstanding that manual Porsche GT gearboxes are a joy to use and for me make you feel more involved in the whole driving experience.

I'd also say you can never get the full RS experience on the road, as you can't really achieve the speeds required to make full use of the extra downforce and thus extra cornering grip - which, in many ways, is the key difference between a GT3 and a RS.

In an ideal world you'd have a manual Touring for the road and an RS for the track...

I must be one of the few that prefers the winged gt3 over the touring. But 3rs is the daddy and in your position I’d be keeping that! Unless you really need the back seats and extra storage in which case I’d be asking dealer for a winged slot

What about the lightweight package? I guess I am betraying my struggling to keep as much as I can from my RS here. Because, in the real world… why make the car 20ish kilos lighter especially if I went manual!
