997 Spoiler vents

Just wondering about ducktails on a 997 (I own neither the car, nor a ducktail, so please bear with me if I'm asking stupid questions)

The standard 997 spoiler has vents/ducts/whatever. Are these used for engine cooling or aero? And if the former, does a ducktail reduce the cooling?

The ones I have seen on a 997 have vents too.
