991 gen ride comfort
Discussion
Hi,
I’m looking at getting back into a 991.x gen car again after a break. My priorities have changed as this will be very much a daily type usage . Most of my journeys are bumpy b roads and local. I have a weekend car.
Has anyone got real world experience on how a standard carrera ride quality compares to an S (with SPASM disengaged) ? Also I’ve read in the past the GTS is a firmer ride than a S?
I owned a 991.2 S for a couple of years (2-3 years ago) so this my reference.
The narrative is the carrera will have the best ride but is it actually true?
Thanks!

Good question.
I have not driven both, but I deliberately purchased a Carrera with the smaller alloys as our South Wales roads are so poor.
I run the tyres a couple of psi below recommended and the ride is just fine.
That said, it's never going to be as comfortable as our 3 series, and sometimes I find myself taking the BMW if I need to whizz around town, as the roads are so unforgiving (crap).
Enjoy your hunt and purchase

You are probably not alone.
I do most of my annual mileage in France, where the roads are mainly excellent.
So, with the state of many UK roads, and the noisy asphalt used here, it’s a sensible question.
I had three 991s - a 991.1 GTS, 991.2 GT3 Touring and 991.2 base.
On UK roads, the base model 991.2 on 19” wheels and GY Eagle F1’s had the most compliant and quietest ride comfort, with no noticeable handling compromises.
Thanks. I was looking at a GTS but worry about the ride. Is the GTS much more firm then ?I do most of my annual mileage in France, where the roads are mainly excellent.

Thanks. I suspect base car will be the way forward (and cheaper:-) )I have not driven both, but I deliberately purchased a Carrera with the smaller alloys as our South Wales roads are so poor.

The thing with ride comfort is you notice it most of the time.
Cars with the 10mm lowered suspension also feel detectably firmer. Cars with pccbs have more stable wheel movement, but you can’t have pccbs with the smaller wheels.
Not 991s, but this year I’ve driven four 992s and the relative ride comfort was noticeable in this order:
1. Base 992 - standard suspension 19/20s
2. 992 S - standard suspension 20/21s
3. 992 T - lowered 20/21s
4. 992 GTS - lowered 20/21s

good thread, I am invested in this, as I am very close to selling my 996 toy car and my 330d daily driver to consolidate into a 991S.
I am in the North East and roads aren't any better. I don't mind for occasional driving, but 12k miles a year might become a grind, which will defeat the purpose.
The 991 I test drove was lovely, but so was the road run we chose. Which was a bit silly, thinking about it.

Done 2500 miles in my 991.2 GTS & the ride isn’t an issue at all either fully loaded for touring or empty & going for a blat. It’s never going to be a magic carpet as it’s a sportscar & the ride is part of feeling what the chassis is doing.
However, the DSC 3 upgrade PASM controller has been highly recommended & takes 10mins to DIY fit.

If my experience of the 992 is anything to go by, there can be variance within the same model. I have a 992 GTS that I have done 9,000m in and can find the ride annoyingly harsh, even with comfort tyre pressures and I think I would get fed up if it was my daily. A friend had the same car, manufactured within a couple of months which I have also driven on a few occasions and his is much less harsh and would be fine for a daily (it is his daily). The differences between cars is mine is a manual coupe on Goodyear F1s and his is a PDK, cab on Pirelli’s but with PDCC. I can’t see the tyres being that different so suspect the difference is PDCC and if buying a GTS again is something I would be looking for. Whether this was the same for the 991, I don’t know.

Ah, that’s interesting. My GTS has PDCC so maybe that’s why the ride is less harsh .Edited to remove emoji that didn’t work.
