I am planning on doing some preventative/ remediation work on my wheel arches. The worst one is pictured and shows the rubber flaps protruding from the metal arch. Is this a straight forward item to replace? Whilst doing this I was also going to have any of the surface rust treated. Is this a pretty common issue on an 05 plate? Any suggested garages near Lytham would be welcome along with any other experiences of similar work.
Thanks
Sam

Start by removing the rear wheel and arch liner. My bet is that you have a load of crud stuck in there - most 997s do. Clean it out and, if you are lucky, it will only be surface rust that you can fix your self (and reattach a new fastener). And then do the same the other side.

I noticed there was some loose gravel in there. I take it removing is fairly easy with no unusual tooling - does the alloy need to come off first to get access?

Most of that looks like the fixing for the plastic sill and mud flap guard has rusted out. For easy of access remove wheel and then there are only a few fixing to undo. It’s not common to rust there so I’m expecting that once the guard is off the panel will only need a clean up, at worst minor touch up. I get a new sill guard to refix

Fixings wise from memory I believe there are 2 into the underside of the sill and 1 or 2 in wheel arch . All the normal Porsche stews with either star or Hex pattern heads

I'd agree with the above 100% . My 997.1 had about 20/25cm build up of crud in one arch and about 10cm in the other arch. The cause of the larger build up crud in one arch was a missing screw on the liner which allowed a gap for the crud/water to penetrate.

I'd advise checking under the arches once a year.

Lots of crud cleared on one side, the other wasn’t too bad.

Ended up treating the metal with waxoxyl. I don’t think anything was missing and suspect worth doing every so often.

while you're under there- take a look at those carbon steel bars running diagonally under the engine. if you're in the mood for rust removal, I'll bet they could do with a bit of TLC too

I took my diagonal struts off, put a wire brush on my grinder and took them back to bare metal and then hand painted them with Hammerite gloss black. A couple of years later they're still great looking.
